If, and/or when, these type of programs were to spread like virus, nationwide & become generally accepted like TSA, DUI roadblocks, etc., it'd simply complete the final nail in the coffin vs. the American Constitutional Republic, by turning us into a snitch culture, a veritable Nazi/Stasi/Stalinist 'watch what you say/show/do, to whom you show/say it to'-neighbor vs. neighbor police state:

For more than a year, New York state has maintained a tip line allowing people to report illegal gun owners and collect a $500 reward.
CBS-6 news reported the existence of the tip line on Wednesday. It was previously a “well-kept secret” that received little promotion from state officials or fanfare in the media, according to the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association.
A February 2012 press release from Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s office first publicly announced the tip line, saying it was designed to “encourage citizens to report illegal firearm possession.”

Albany’s WRGB reports New York has set up a website where a tipster can get a $500 reward for turning in gun owners. (https://www.facebook.com/CBS6Albany?ref=ts&fref=ts)
Essentially, a snitch can call 1-855-GUNSNYS, 1.855.486.7697, a line manned 24/7/365 by the New York State Police to report a gun owner. Snitches can also text GUNTIP and their message to CRIMES (274637). Troopers will solicit as much information as possible, then relay information to the appropriate police agency to begin an investigation. If the information leads to an illegal possession of a firearm arrest the “tipster” will be awarded $500.
And given the fear and loathing the law abiding gun owner have been subjected to by New York Democrats like Cuomo, you can bet there will be thousands of tips. And some of them will actually lead to prosecutions. But for the most part, these investigations will be very little more than persecutions as vindictive neighbors turn in community members they have a grudge against.

The Eternal Cautious Optimist in me says that our Constitutional heritage, the Gun Culture, and the Culture of Liberty in America runs FAR too deep and strong for a bunch of displaced LA & NYC denizens (who seem to spread like a virus to every awesome place in America and repeat the political mistakes/intentional malice that made them leave those very cities, in the first place, over and over again: over-burdensome taxes/high cost of living and heavy nanny-state govt intrusion into their daily lives) to hijack, overtake and destroy our culture.
However, observing how gullible the populace are on a whole slew of issues, let alone large geopolitical metric markers? I never underestimate the depth of capacity for the BluePill Sheeple's willful ignorance.
'Funny' how all these gungrabbers seem to have all these programs 'on standby'...just in case another opportune politically expedient tragedy just happens to land on their laps...er, like 3 times in a row, consecutively, sequentially, all in less than 6 months: Aurora, Clackamas Mall, Newtown.
How 'lucky' for them.

500 bucks is a nice fee for being a blabber mouth. if the increase it if will lead to more blabbing.

cops are happy as shit because they get to play commando with people that really dont fit the profile.

even if everything checks out. You now have a file on your ass and you will be on the round up list when the time comes.

This is a pretty powerful divide and conquer tactic.

I would predict that the murder rate increases because of this government program. It will increase up to a point where the government program is no longer effective because no one will participate. Is $500 worth your life?

All this anti-gun talk is really starting to bother me. The facts speak for themselves. The areas with the most gun restrictions are the worst shitholes in our country. All gun laws do is take rights away from folks who are responsible. To me, this is a no brainer. The fact that these assholes come after us, bothers me.

You know, I used to be pissed at the banks. That was my first wake up. The banksters are just greedy. You can explain that, greed has it's rewards. These pricks just want to cut our balls off for fun.

To resort to pitting people against their neighbors, is just that. A kick in the balls.

All the totalitarian governments rewarded snitching on your fellow citizens. They encouraged kids to snitch on their parents. East Germany paid 1/3 of the population to snitch on everybody--including the other snitches.

The way to make snitching for a reward ineffective is to make it more expensive to snitch than the reward for doing so.

People are going to have to learn how to think for themselves on this issue. It is unfortunate that there are too many people who have such a high regard and trust for authority that they do not need a reward to turn anybody in to the authorities. These are the people who are most receptive to 'See Something, Say Something. People need to watch how the police administer violence on people, and how the courts condone this violence. They need to understand how snitching is a social disease. If you snitch on others, you better be real clean yourself because others are going to snitch on you--maybe even frame you. I can see that life is going to get much more complicated for all of us as the tyrants enlist the help of the weak minded in enslaving us. I'm sure we will all get a really good education about how tyranny works.
