Teacher Suspended For Showing Kids Pliers

Doug Bartlett, a second grade teacher at Washington Irving Elementary School, was suspended for four days after administrators determined the tools he used for visual aids endangered students.

In 2011 Bartlett was teaching a mandated course on “tools.” He showed students several tools that he used in his classroom including wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, a box cutter, and a small pocketknife. He explained how the tools were used and kept the items secured in a tool box.

Good call. That teacher should be thrown in jail for bringing tools into school. You know that school is a no-tolerance gun-free zone. Tools are used to make guns. Very simple to see the wrong here.

What a chauvinist pig idiot!

He should have shown the kids sex toys instead! He would be in charge of school policy in the Obama administration by now!

At least he wasn't wielding a stapler. Those things have high capacity magazines typically.

Now if he had said "these are the very pliers that ripped the teeth and fillings out of the heads of 1 million jews during the war" he would be getting awards standing ovations.

So did they take all of the scissors out of the classroom?

So did they take all of the scissors out of the classroom?

No, they need to keep those handy in case of a terrorist attack, as per HLS.

Fixed it for you. It is now AIPAC approved.

I was thinking they would crumple paper and throw paper balls at bad guys until the police arrived to save them. Scissors just seem so mean and violent. I saw a kindergarten teacher cut herself with scissors and I was never the same after that.

what do they do in wood shop? I guess the students have to "sign-out" the tools they use ::)

Dude, I'm not agreeing with it being a problem, but the school has a policy on students etc carrying knives on school property. Someone reported the guy pulling out a pocket knife during his demonstration, and the administration has a policy in place, so they acted on their own policy. Just reporting the facts man, the story says it was pliers, but there is more to the story apparently.

I ultimately don't know, and i doubt he did. He should have a sidearm IMO if that's his thing, but their policy is a weapons tolerance issue, so that's the deal. It should be approached from that angle, not over a pair of pliers. I hate misleading stories, it causes all kinds of nonsense, and gets people all riled up, and skirts over the real issue that needs to be addressed.

what's the real issue then?

The real issue is everyone will be focused on talking about a pair of pliers, when they should be talking about the guy getting spanked over a pocket knife. It's subtle, but there is a difference. It seems like a tactic to me. The MSM will package it as some silly pair of pliers story instead of what really happened there. A knife will lead into the gun debate issue much easier than a pair of pliers to the medicated masses IMO. Not all the facts were reported, I'm wondering why....
