California bill would let non-citizens serve on Juries

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The California Assembly passed a bill on Thursday that would make the state the first in the nation to allow non-citizens who are in the country legally to serve on jury duty.

Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, said his bill, AB1401, would help California widen the pool of prospective jurors and help integrate immigrants into the community. It does not change other criteria for being eligible to serve on a jury, such as being at least 18, living in the county that is making the summons, and being proficient in English.

The bill passed 45-25 largely on a party-line vote in the Democratic-controlled Assembly and will move on to the Senate. One Democrat - Assemblyman Adam Gray, of Merced - voted no, while some other Democrats did not vote.

More citizens are becoming aware that the courts are not on the people's side, the court is a money making machine for the state. The courts know they have to find people sympathetic to the state, so they will naturally go for any persons living on government aid. Such persons will side with the state and convict citizens to glean money off the working class.

I can only guess that CA will need more interpreters so that the jury knows what the hell did that bad gringo do.

When I served jury duty here in California we had illegal aliens called into the jury pool. They didn't speak a word of English and it was one after the other. You could just say they were acting to get out of jury duty, but it seemed pretty legitimate. One said (in Spanish, since I understand it) that her entire community was Spanish speaking, and the school she sent her children to were all Spanish speaking, and she didn't understand why they wanted her to speak in English, and she found it rude. She plead racism against her people. They excused her.

This was seven years ago, mind you.
