Townsend doesn't hit strings, he makes chords.

The world will never know a force greater than The Who performing "Sparks" live in 1970.

Pete is completely deaf in one ear and only has 20-30% hearing in the good one.
Hard rocking and no ear protection is a terrible Piper to pay

Keep coming back to this vid, made me review Kieth Moon more closely, what a great & sloppy innovator he was. :)
I dunno if we'll see someone do what he did for the percussion section ever again?
pretty good debate upon him here,

Townshend uses the strings as a cheese grater for what's left of his stumpified right fingers.
Daltrey looks about as natural with a guitar as Clinton playing sax. If anyone, he is the guy that's "unplugged" up there.
Pete Townshend looks kind of like Ross:

I don't particularly like the Who, or Pete Townshend's guitar playing, but...
He is, in fact, playing.
Been playing guitar since I was 14, and that was a long time ago. I know when a guitar player is faking it, and he isn't.
