The weight and size of the fake SAEs is spot on. They have a silver washing over a base metal core. They fail the ring test. Be careful as the are very good fakes. In the photo, note the poor taper of the sun's rays and the overly textured webbing in the flag that give the fake away to a keen eye.

The fake looks very fake to me. The sun's rays look like ridiculous chunks. The detail of the real coin is chunk-ified in the fake. And the fake Lady Liberty appears to be wearing pasties.

It's easy after you know what to look for. Maloney expressed concern that the counterfeits are getter better and better and in the future may be very difficult to detect.

they couldn't tell the glaring difference that her breast were exposed....
I don't think they could even bust the Chinese for that fake.

I saw this clip earlier and after looking at the eagles, i think the difference is like night and day. Only an untrained eye with a distant casual glance could possibly mistaken these. How any reputable dealer could get fooled by this is hard to believe. Why even need a "ring test"?

The bastard thieves in China have been counterfeiting for years. They have some very nice Peace dollar dies that produce fakes good enough to trick many dealers.
Beware of fakes in everything.
BTW- yeup, sure got a pair of owl eyes on that fake.

Fake U.S Silver Eagle coins soaring through Hamilton, police say
Hamilton Police say they've gathered over 500 fake U.S Silver Eagle coins sold across the city over the past few months.

Hamilton coin collectors and pawn shops are getting duped.
Police are warning that fake U.S silver eagle dollar coins have been circulating in the city and have been sold to various establishments over the past few months.
"You wouldn't be able to tell the difference (with) the naked eye. The coins are actually very high quality fakes," Const. Mike La Combe said in a Hamilton Police YouTube video. "They are silver and nickel-plated, which gives them the look of an actual silver dollar. However, when you cut them open, you can clearly see on the inside, they are brass filled."
The video shows some of the roughly 500 fakes that have been confiscated so far.

"They are worth practically nothing, just a couple cents each," La Combe explained.
LaCombe is a pawn unit investigator and says the coins are being bought online, then sold at "golden" times for the seller when shops are busy or with little staff. During the rush, employees may not have the time to do all the proper authenticity checks, giving criminals the chance to sell fast without getting caught.
"Only buy them from reputable dealers, a place that is established, an expert who works there who knows the difference between real and fake. Don't buy them off the internet. and don't buy them from people from the public who aren't considered experts because more than likely you're going to get a fake," added Le Combe.

"We recommend buyers only trust in Silver Maples, since they are much harder to counterfeit. The queens mug is so terrifying that the original artist was turned to stone and there is no record of any counterfeiter who could duplicate the saurine eyes of the original maple design."
Here's some turn to stone for you all. Joe Walsh and Don Feldner teach the Eagles how to sit back and watch the men play.....At 6:45 it goes into a few bars of "You just keep me hangin on" which I have never heard in a mix of this one. Best version of this one I have heard.
Down with the queen...

This is how they will scare commoners away from metals. Most I run into are not sophisticated enough to read the ingredients labels on the food they buy. None of the common morons could think about applying tests to metals.

Good point. This guy has 500 of these fakes and in all my years visiting LCS and shopping on line I have seen not one fake SAE. How is this possible. Is Hamilton the Mecca of of fake SAE production?

the 1917 Liberty is not real feminine looking.
i guess you need a coin in XF or better condition to see the details.
all these coins with pictures of women - and no Nipple action - except maybe on the Mexican coin - a little bit.

Check out the fake SAE in this video - it is very impressive. If you glance at the stars in the flag, it betrays the fake. But this is only obvious side by side with the real deal. These are very good fakes IMHO and could easily fool the casual buyer and inattentive coin dealer. Note that with this fake, the counterfeiter has the reverse upside down, a dead giveaway - though we don't know if all the fakes are this way:

no one has a monopoly on the industrial arts.
silver plating is cheap, gold-plating is relatively cheap. tungsten is cheap, though hard to machine.
i think where this is going is towards silver (and gold) counterfeit rounds that are visually indistinguishable from the real thing.
that leaves us with test methods like -
* destructive testing, i.e. cut it in half. that costs about 3% - if you're lucky.
* sound testing, which is better if you can use quantitative methods, i.e. use a sound analyzer & not rely only on human judgment
* that sliding magnet test device
also i don't blame coin dealers & market makers for shying away from 100 ounce bars & even 10 ounce bars.
so i guess those Circulated Silver Merc's & Roos'ies are making more & more sense, as "least likely to be counterfeited". Jeez, they're worth $2 each, even with paper silver prices knocked down.

it gets even better... and better. However, the problem is power... as long as people fail to understand the inherent issues with it (that it is an illusion), shenanigans and deceptions are here to stay.
Every time I come n here and read the OPS, I have to shake my head in disbelief...

In the video above he shows a neodymium magnet weakly but definitely sticking to the fake SAE, indicating that the alloy is weakly ferromagneticd, so your magnet is still worth using. Remember "Forearmed is foreskinned."

so who made the dies ? who is making the planchetts ? who is doing the stamping ? who is doing the plating ?
is the dealer going to buy a sheet metal shear - or something - to inspect incoming rounds ?
i bet if we started going to coin shows within a 500 mile radius, and had small tables with "we buy silver" signs, we'd meet the guy who is selling these.
you would need to buy 1 round or bar from everybody & destructively test it - without anybody seeing what you are doing. since most of them would test good, you'd end up with a big pile of silver half moons.
maybe that will become the new "In" shape. 1/2 ounce rounds cut in half.
