New Anti-Defamation League Florida region director Hava Leipzig Holzhauer sat down with the Jewish Journal last week for her first interview since she started the job almost three weeks ago.
Holzhauer, 40 and a Boca Raton (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/bocaraton?track=tax-bocaraton) resident, is an attorney whose resume includes a stint in the juvenile crimes division of the Palm Beach State Attorney's Office.
She said she got a "close up view of hate crimes and how you elevate a regular crime to a hate crime when somebody chooses their victim based on race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin or disability."
ADL developed the hate crimes statute that has been adopted in 45 states, Holzhauer said. "It's wonderful to have seen that at work first hand."
A 2011 ADL report on extremism in Florida said hate groups and anti-government extremist groups can be found throughout the state. "I don't think we're unique or alone," Holzhauer said, "but it's something Florida has to deal with."

ADL's people work all day to get an intricate understanding of extremism on the right and on the left — White Supremacists and Skin Heads — she said. And ADL tallies and organizes the different types of hate groups, she added.
At the national level ADL monitors web sites, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and all kinds of social media to see what the trends are and to track various hate groups, Holzhauer said.
When ADL was started 100 years ago, and even 50 years ago, cyber-hate and cyber-bullying weren't thought about, Holzhauer said. The Florida region is working with schools on cyber-hate, educating teachers, she said.
Holzhauer said she has the "justice gene" and a passion for working for civil rights.
When not at work or with her husband and four children, Holzhauer has been involved in the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/). She served on the Jewish Community Relations Council and as a volunteer in Women's Philanthropy.
Holzhauer said she recently went on a Women's Philanthropy mission to Washington, D.C. "Part of it was camaraderie building, as these missions are," she said. "But it was also to see what we're doing at the federal level as far as legislation."
Holzhauer and her daughter, both life members of Hadassah, joined a long list of family members who have been involved in the women's organization, she said.
Her work at the Palm Beach State Attorney's Office, her interest in civil rights, and her experience as a mediator were strong points on Holzhauer's resume, Steve Daniels, ADL Florida Region chair and head of the search committee, said.
The committee received more than 500 resumes, interviewed more than a dozen candidates and invited four applicants to second interviews before selecting Holzhauer, Daniels said.
"The ADL gets involved in a lot of real life issues," he said. "She brings real life experience to the position."
Elliot Koolik of Boca Raton (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/bocaraton?track=tax-bocaraton), a friend who went through the two-year Wexner Heritage Program for volunteer Jewish leaders with Holzhauer, described her as "extremely passionate about Israel and Judaism." Koolik called Holzhauer a "perfect fit" for the top job in ADL's Florida region.
Longtime friend Marianne Altschul of West Boca Raton (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/bocaraton?track=tax-bocaraton) called Holzhauer "the most capable woman I know. She can juggle more items than anyone I've ever met and I marvel that nothing ever hits the floor."
Holzhauer is "extremely bright, astute and open-minded," Altschul said. She has an intellectual curiosity and a love of Judaism, her friend added.
"She really is about human service and human justice," Altschul said, calling Holzhauer a "perfect fit" for the job of directing ADL's Florida region.
Holzhauer said she is excited about coming to ADL. "What's better than to spend every day trying to bring people together. I feel very lucky that I get to take part in ADL's mission of bringing people together and bringing civil discourse to our everyday conversation."
She added, "This is my 40th year. I've had a good job. I've had jobs before. This is a career. I've married my professional career and my passions for what I think is important and now I am able to focus on that all day long."

ADL's people work all day to get an intricate understanding of extremism on the right and on the left — White Supremacists and Skin Heads — she said. And ADL tallies and organizes the different types of hate groups, she added.
At the national level ADL monitors web sites, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and all kinds of social media to see what the trends are and to track various hate groups, Holzhauer said.
When ADL was started 100 years ago, and even 50 years ago, cyber-hate and cyber-bullying weren't thought about, Holzhauer said. The Florida region is working with schools on cyber-hate, educating teachers, she said.
Holzhauer said she has the "justice gene" and a passion for working for civil rights.
When not at work or with her husband and four children, Holzhauer has been involved in the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/). She served on the Jewish Community Relations Council and as a volunteer in Women's Philanthropy.
Holzhauer said she recently went on a Women's Philanthropy mission to Washington, D.C. "Part of it was camaraderie building, as these missions are," she said. "But it was also to see what we're doing at the federal level as far as legislation."
Holzhauer and her daughter, both life members of Hadassah, joined a long list of family members who have been involved in the women's organization, she said.
Her work at the Palm Beach State Attorney's Office, her interest in civil rights, and her experience as a mediator were strong points on Holzhauer's resume, Steve Daniels, ADL Florida Region chair and head of the search committee, said.
The committee received more than 500 resumes, interviewed more than a dozen candidates and invited four applicants to second interviews before selecting Holzhauer, Daniels said.
"The ADL gets involved in a lot of real life issues," he said. "She brings real life experience to the position."
Elliot Koolik of Boca Raton (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/bocaraton?track=tax-bocaraton), a friend who went through the two-year Wexner Heritage Program for volunteer Jewish leaders with Holzhauer, described her as "extremely passionate about Israel and Judaism." Koolik called Holzhauer a "perfect fit" for the top job in ADL's Florida region.
Longtime friend Marianne Altschul of West Boca Raton (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/bocaraton?track=tax-bocaraton) called Holzhauer "the most capable woman I know. She can juggle more items than anyone I've ever met and I marvel that nothing ever hits the floor."
Holzhauer is "extremely bright, astute and open-minded," Altschul said. She has an intellectual curiosity and a love of Judaism, her friend added.
"She really is about human service and human justice," Altschul said, calling Holzhauer a "perfect fit" for the job of directing ADL's Florida region.
Holzhauer said she is excited about coming to ADL. "What's better than to spend every day trying to bring people together. I feel very lucky that I get to take part in ADL's mission of bringing people together and bringing civil discourse to our everyday conversation."
She added, "This is my 40th year. I've had a good job. I've had jobs before. This is a career. I've married my professional career and my passions for what I think is important and now I am able to focus on that all day long."
