My interner provider gave me a new moden when they came yesterday......but.....the moden has a password that cannot be changed and that they have access to it at all time, in other words, my laptop is an open book to them......what can I do? is there a way to put a counter password on top of theirs that only I have access to ?...thanks.
PS: In Europe you now have to "register" all garden seeds to be sure that they are "safe"

Get into the modem and change the password. Type in the address bar 192.168.0.1
If that number doesn't work you will need to look it up on the net for your particular modem/router.

You would need to purchase a hardware router/firewall which you control. Run the insecure WAN connection from the modem to the router, then plug your computer into the router. The router will have extensive settings allowing you to configure, monitor, and control access to the LAN ports behind the firewall
WAN = wide area network (the internet)
LAN - local area network (the internal network you control)

What make and model number modem do you have? If you can post that info, it will help us find the default password and address, then you could log in and change it.
My understanding about modems is the provider can see the settings of the modem, but not what is on your computer , tho I may/could be wrong.

I suspect the Fed agencies can tap into your computer any time it is on line.
