Specialized mental health nurses to get K-12 students help sooner

A new kind of school nurse will soon walk the halls of Windsor-Essex high schools: one that’s specially trained to help students manage mental health problems and tackle addictions.
“We’re a little bit closer to home. We’re easier to access,” said Tanya Rauls, one of four registered nurses funded by the province to work in local schools.
The specialized mental health and addictions nurses are part of a provincewide effort to nip mental health problems and addictions in the bud by putting the first point of contact right where young people spend most of their day — in school.
