The immigration reform measure the Senate began debating yesterday would create a national biometric database of virtually every adult in the U.S., in what privacy groups fear could be the first step to a ubiquitous national identification system.

Buried in the more than 800 pages of the bipartisan legislation (http://www.judiciary.senate.gov/legislation/EAS13500toMDM13313redline.pdf) (.pdf) is language mandating the creation of the innocuously-named “photo tool,” a massive federal database administered by the Department of Homeland Security and containing names, ages, Social Security numbers and photographs of everyone in the country with a driver’s license or other state-issued photo ID.

Employers would be obliged to look up every new hire in the database to verify that they match their photo.

And these things are usually only enforced on me, you, and joe sixpack. Actually using this to track illegals would be "racist profiling" I'm sure. All this "immigration legislation" just screws over those of us that that fit a certain profile, I.E. not illegals.

I had to go for a year without a drivers license up here in Oregon because when I went to renew my license, which I'd had for 25 years, required an "official" copy of my birth certificate. Took me over 9 months to get it from California since somehow LA lost it, but thankfully Sacremento managed to find a copy. Supposedly all this was all to stop illegals. Well they just recently passed a law to give licenses to illegals!!! WTF??!! Drives me crazy!

So glad I don't have a state issued DRIVER LICENSE or ID CARD. (I know who I am, I don't need a legal fiction to affirm that for me)

Well I survived a year without one. Sure as hell didn't keep me from driving, but in the end I eventually needed it for my state business licensing. The tangled web touches us in many ways. Glad you've managed to get by without being hassled. Unfortunately with a family that depends on me, I'm unable to take too much of a stand for ultimate "freedom".
