KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - A 15-year-old boy tried to break into a Kansas City store with a hammer, but wound up being shot by the owner who was there after hours, police said.
The boy, who was shot in the stomach, is expected to recover, police said.
This happened about 1:30 a.m. Friday at the Snack Pack convenience store, which is near East 45th Street and Prospect Avenue.
The store was closed, but the owner, John Mondaine, was inside still doing some work.
His daughter, Tammy Mondaine, said she learned about the burglary and shooting about 5 a.m. Friday. She said her father shot by when he saw an intruder.
She said so many people are working to improve the neighborhood, but incidents like this hurt those efforts.
"It's a disgrace to the neighborhood, and I'm thankful that my Dad is healthy and alive," she said.
The Snack-Pack store has been in the community and the family for nearly 50 years. Mondaine said she is frustrated by the crime and the lack of support.
"If people don't want this neighborhood store to be here anymore, we can always leave," Mondaine said. "We don't want to leave. My Dad is devoted to it. We've been here 50 years, and if no one appreciates us, fine. I think people don't appreciate what we try to give them here."
She said the loss of neighborhood grocery stores hurts the inner city.
"I'm offering people here to get some help because if they don't this neighborhood is going to be trash," she said.
Dan Bock owns the nearby Murdock's Seafood. HE said his and the Snack-Pack owners work to keep crime away and businesses open.
"It's kind of scary. I don't like to see that happen," he said.
Bock said business owners realize they are the eyes and ears of the neighborhood, try to look out for each other and warn each other of issues.
"I've warned the other people around here and we warn the others around here," Bock said.
