It's an engineering-driven company. If you're an engineer or product manager, life is great at Google, and the pay is fantastic.

The same isn't as true for Googlers in roles like operations, HR, and PR, who aren't deemed as important as engineers in the company. To be valued, people in other job roles need to show how they fit into the process of shipping a product. That directive won't come from the top.

What moron wrote that. What do you expect form a tech company?

Here again: "And if you're not an engineer, chances are your pay package won't be nearly as competitive."

Companies change though, and not in a good way. I was with the same Civil Engineering firm for 20 years, and I watched a thriving company full of engineers and surveyors with ONE "HR" person turn into a struggling mess where the HR managers, assistants, assistants to the assistants, etc, started to outnumber the engineers and surveyors. People forget, if you aren't part of the operation "making money", you are a liability, not an asset, and you just bring the company down from a financial standpoint. Unfortunately I think more and more businesses are being turned into this unviable business model thru government regulations. It's to the point where every "worker" needs an "HR" person there to hold their hand. Easy for the government to push this model because they'll never understand the idea of creating something. They can only feed off the system.
