Food Freedom (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010/08/16/gmo-crop-sabotage-on-the-rise-french-citizens-destroy-gmo-vineyard/)

Early Sunday morning, French police stood helpless as sixty people, locked inside an open-air field of genetically modified grapevines, uprooted all the plants. In Spain last month, dozens of people destroyed two GMO fields. On the millennial cusp, Indian farmers burned Bt cotton in their Cremate Monsanto campaign. Ignored by multinational corporations and corrupt public policy makers, citizens act to protect the food supply and the planet.

The French vineyard is the same field attacked last year when the plants were only cut. But the security features installed after that incident kept authorities at bay while the group accomplished its mission yesterday.

Speaking for the group, Olivier Florent told Le Figero (http://www.lefigaro.fr/sciences-technologies/2010/08/15/01030-20100815ARTFIG00131-des-faucheurs-s-en-prennent-aux-pieds-de-vigne-de-l-inra.php) that they condemned the use of public funds for open-field testing of GMOs “that we do not want.”

Pitching tents in the rain near France’s National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) site in Colmar the night before, the group waited until 5 AM before converging on the site and locking the gates behind them. They uprooted all 70 plants, then submitted to arrest.

This is the second attack on GMO crops to make international news this year. In July dozens of people destroyed two experimental corn crops in Spain. In an anonymous press release (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010/07/14/uprooting-ecoterrorism-syngenta-gm-crops-sabotaged-in-spain/), they wrote, “This kind of direct action is the best way to respond to the fait accompli policy through which the Generalitat, the State and the biotech multinationals have been unilaterally imposing genetically modified organisms.”

In the late 1990s, Indian farmers burnt Bt cotton fields in their http://www.raqsmediacollective.net/globalvillage/work/Monsanto (Cremate Monsanto campaign. Monsanto did not disclose to farmers that the GM seeds were experimental. “Despite the heavy use of chemical fertiliser, traces of which still can be observed in the field, the Bt plants grew miserably, less than half the size of the traditional cotton plants in the adjacent fields.”

After the Haiti earthquake this year, Monsanto offered 475 tons of hybrid corn and terminator vegetable seeds in partnership with USAID. In June, 10,000 Haitian farmers marched (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/10000-haitians-march-against-monsanto-terminator-seed-donation/) in protest of the “poison gift” which produces no viable seeds for future plantings and requires heavy chemical inputs. Haitian farm leader Chavannes Jean-Baptiste observed that the biotech plan makes farmers dependent on multinational corporations.

In the US, GMOs were secretly foisted on the public in the mid-1990s, and only now is the US Supreme Court addressing the scourge. In June, the high court upheld partial deregulation of GM alfalfa (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010/06/21/scotus-lifts-partial-ban-on-gm-alfalfa-in-monsanto-v-geertson-seed/), which permits limited planting while the USDA prepares an Environmental Impact Statement. Natural and organic alfalfa supply is threatened by the very real potential of GM contamination. This would destroy the organic (http://www.chewswise.com/chews/2010/03/will-gm-alfalfa-mean-the-end-of-organic-milk.html) meat and dairy industry.

Last Friday, a federal court took a tougher position on GM sugar beets. Judge Jeffrey S. White revoked USDA approval of the GM beet (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/14/business/14sugar.html?_r=1), while allowing for its planting this year only.

Also this month, a British farmer exposed that milk and meat from cloned animals (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/personal-view/7932179/How-would-you-fancy-cloned-beef.html) had secretly entered the food supply.

Public opposition to GM crops has grown in recent years as more evidence surfaces that DNA-altered crops:

Require massive chemical inputs which destroy local biodiversity and poison the water tables;[/*]Cross-pollinate with natural (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2009/12/10/bayer-gmo-contamination-bites-back/) and weedy (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/10/science/10canola.html) crops;[/*]Create superweeds (http://www.i-sis.org.uk/GMCropsFacingMeltdown.php); and[/*]Have been shown to cause organ damage (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010/01/01/three-approved-gmos-linked-to-organ-damage/), sterility (http://www.rense.com/general90/soy.htm), and diabetes and obesity (http://www.rodaleinstitute.org/20100412_nfoped_Ten-good-reasons-why-genetic-engineering-is-not-compatible-with-organic-agriculture) in mammals.[/*]
[/list]
Meanwhile, President Obama has stacked his Administration with biotech insiders (http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_19665.cfm) going so far as to appoint Islam Siddiqui (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2010/03/29/ecoterrorist-becomes-obamas-ag-trade-negotiator/) as Agriculture Trade Negotiator. Siddiqui is a former pesticide lobbyist and vice president of CropLife America, a biotech and pesticide trade group that lobbies to weaken environmental laws.

The US is pushing hard at the world to accept GM foods. Recently, the American Farm Bureau Federation called for stronger sanctions (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N27603063.htm) against the European Union for its GM crop ban.

But as governments and trade agreements circumvent the will of the people, some take matters into their own hands. The rise in GMO crop destruction is a clear indication that the world’s people reject chemical and genetic pollution of the food supply and the environment. http://edge.liveleak.com/80281E/s/s/20/media20/2013/May/21/LiveLeak-dot-com-68be360465ca-27.jpg.resized.jpg?d5e8cc8eccfb6039332f41f6249e92b 06c91b4db65f5e99818bad19f4c42dcd033a7&ec_rate=200 (http://edge.liveleak.com/80281E/s/s/20/media20/2013/May/21/LiveLeak-dot-com-68be360465ca-27.jpg?d5e8cc8eccfb6039332f41f6249e92b06c91b4db65f 5e99818bad19f4c42dcd033a7&ec_rate=200)

Monsanto Found Guilty of Chemical Poisoning in Landmark Case (http://www.realfarmacy.com/monsanto-found-guilty-of-chemical-poisoning-in-landmark-case1/) May 21 • Articles (http://www.realfarmacy.com/category/in-the-news/media/articles/), The Word (http://www.realfarmacy.com/category/in-the-news/the-word/) • 1734 Views • Comments (http://www.realfarmacy.com/monsanto-found-guilty-of-chemical-poisoning-in-landmark-case1/#comments)

The French court in Lyon ruled that Monsanto’s Lasso weedkiller formula, which contains the active ingredient alachlor, caused Paul Francois to develop lifelong neurological damage that manifests as persistent memory loss, headaches, and stuttering during speech.
Reports indicate that the 47-year-old farmer sued Monsanto back in 2004 after inhaling the Lasso product while cleaning his sprayer tank equipment. Not long after, Francois began experiencing lasting symptoms that prevented him from working, which he says were directly linked to exposure to the chemical. Since Lasso’s packaging did not bear adequate warnings about the dangers of exposure, Francois alleged at the time that Monsanto was essentially negligent in providing adequate protection for its customers.
To the surprise of many, the French court agreed with the claims and evidence presented before it, declaring earlier this year that “Monsanto is responsible for Paul Francois’ suffering after he inhaled the Lasso product … and must entirely compensate him.” The court is said to be seeking expert opinion on how to gauge Francois’ losses in order to determine precisely how much Monsanto will be required to compensate him in the case.
“It is a historic decision in so far as it is the first time that a (pesticide) maker is found guilty (http://www.naturalnews.com/guilty.html) of such a poisoning,” said Francois Lafforgue, Paul Francois’ lawyer, to Reuters earlier in the year.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), exposure to alachlor can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, spleen, and eyes, and may lead to the development of anemia and even cancer. The EPA apparently views alachlor as so dangerous, in fact, that the agency has set the maximum contaminant level goals (MCLG) for alachlor to zero in order to “prevent potential health problems.” (http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/basicinformation/alachlor.cfm)
In 2007, France officially banned Lasso from use in the country in accordance with a European Union (EU) directive enacted in 2006 prohibiting the chemical from further use on crops in any member countries. But despite all the evidence proving that alachlor can disrupt hormonal balance, induce reproductive or developmental problems, and cause cancer, the chemical is still being used on conventional crops throughout the U.S. to this very day. (http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_ChemReg.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35160)
“I am alive today, but part of the farming population is going to be sacrificed and is going to die because of (alachlor),” added Francois to Reuters.

Activist Post (http://www.activistpost.com/2013/05/breaking-news-china-destroys-3-us.html)

According to a report released today (http://www.gmwatch.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14853:china-destroys-three-shipments-of-gm-corn-from-us) by GMWatch, China destroyed three shipments of GM corn imported from the US.

The first two shipments are referenced on the website of the Zhuhai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (http://www.zhciq.gov.cn/showInfo.do?infoId=26648), confirming that two illegal GM corn shipments entered Wanzai Port in Zhuhai City on May 7th, and were subsequently destroyed:

Recently, during inspection and quarantine of imported food from USA by a certain company, the Wanzai Office of Zhuhai Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (in Guangdong Province in the south of China) detected two shipments containing GM corn products, which are not in compliance with China's "Entry and Exit of Genetically Modified Products Inspection and Quarantine Management Approach (http://www.daff.gov.au/agriculture-food/biotechnology/reports/maintaining_product_integrity_in_the_australian_se ed_and_grain_supply_chain/appendixes/appendix_a#China)". The Office destroyed the two shipments of corn according to the provisions.*The existence of a third shipment was confirmed in a May 19th article appearing on news.china.com.cn titled, "Harbin intercepted a total of 115 kgs of GM corn seeds, which will be destroyed (http://news.china.com.cn/politics/2013-05/19/content_28867193.htm)":

Recently, the Harbin Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau intercepted inbound mail of 21 cartons of corn seeds from USA, totaling 115 kgs, which were detected as GM seeds. This is the first time that the Heilongjiang Provincial Inspection and Quarantine System has intercepted inbound corn seeds containing GM ingredients. These corn seeds will be destroyed. *
Surprisingly, despite these seemingly drastic steps by Chinese authorities to destroy GM seeds, anarticle in China Daily (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/micro-reading/dzh/2012-06-12/content_6157498.html) from last year explains that the consumption of GM soybeans is already universal in China, even despite widespread public concerns that they have not been adequately safety tested:

Summary: Imported RR soybeans (Roundup herbicide (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/toxic-ingredient/roundup-herbicide) resistant GM soybeans) has already accounted to over 80% of total consumption of soybeans in China, but the assessment and approval procedures for the initial imported GM soybeans, has been oppugned that it's examination procedures exists with defects. According to news reports, on Feb. 20, 2012, Gu Xiu-lin and other three citizens upon application were approved to check the "certification documents for the GM soybeans obtaining safety (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/micro-reading/dzh/2012-06-12/content_6157498.html) certificates".The China Daily article (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/micro-reading/dzh/2012-06-12/content_6157498.html) goes on to quote Shi Yan-quan, Deputy Director, Agricultural Finance and Education Dept., who stated on April 20, 2012, that over 50 million tons of GMO soybeans were imported to China in 2011 alone. The article also refers to the fact that for eight years, 1.3 billion Chinese consumers have been consuming Monsanto's GM food crops, relying entirely on biotech-funded safety evaluations, without any independent safety testing carried out by the Chinese government.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_qLAIskTQXUc/TSVu1WxuKgI/AAAAAAAAFpA/qvqvHS98iwY/150x120-set1.gif (http://activistpost.net/organicfood.html)Additionally, a revealing study published in 2012 (http://www.greenmedinfo.com/article/chinese-newspaper-coverage-genetically-modified-organisms-largely-positive) found that the Chinese print media is completely co-opted by biotech industry influence. They revealed that "48.1% of articles were largely supportive of the GM technology research and development programs and the adoption of GM cottons, while 51.9% of articles were neutral on the subject of GMOs. Risks associated with GMOs were mentioned in the newspaper articles, but none of the articles expressed negative tones in regards to GMOs."

The authors concluded:

Chinese print media is largely supportive of GMOs. It also indicates that the print media describes the Chinese government as actively pursuing national GMO research and development programs and the promotion of GM cotton usage. Are these latest incidents of the destruction of GM imports a sign that the tide is turning, and China, one of the world's largest consumers of GM food, is finally drawing a hard and fast line against Monsanto and related biotech corporations co-option of their food supply?
