If you would like to read what a Navy recruit had to know in 1917. Includes a list of equipment that they were required to carry on marches. Pay could have been better but then again everything else was provided (except clothes).

I must have read something wrong because my pay when I went in the army was the same as theirs $60.00...so, what did I do wrong?

These are NAVY manuals. You got into the wrong service.

Actually there was really little inflation until the U.S. went off the silver standard.

Sure Palani, but to compare what you could buy in 1917 with sixty bucks to what I could buy for the same ammoung in 1959 makes a hell of a difference.....is like them earning $550.00.

I can relate. I used to make $1.90 an hour in the late 60s and early 70s. Sort of like making $25 an hour now.
