I just scored a great second generation 5 piece Military sleeping system at a yard sale this week that was almost brand new. I have used the 4-piece first generation bags in the past in below -0 weather and they are the absolutely the best for 4 season bug out or camping. The whole system is a tad heavy at 11 pounds when toting the entire system but the great thing is you can mix and match for the expected weather at the time being used so carry weight will vary. They are good for use from summer temps down to arctic temps below -30 to -60° (wearing extreme weather hood, thermals and booties)
You do not even need a tent if you use the gore Tex bivy bag, it will keep you dry and warm in rain and snow.
There are a ton of the first generation 4-piece Mss system bags on the market at very decent prices now that the military converted to the second generation. Bunch of new and used with the prices all over the place but compared to similar rated commercial bags/systems the surplus ones are a great deal (cheap). I scored the yard sale one for $40 they sell now for over $200. And I bought a second first generation system that was brand new and still had the sewn in paper inspection tags all over the bags for $75.00.
I can not say enough good about this system, built to military standards, this is one thing the military got right.
