"these new candidates will help lead the first human mission to an asteroid, and then Mars." (< mars? LOL)
The only way to get to an asteriod, is to travel into a place where Man is NOT DESIGNED to go. Those jellybags will not last long IF (that's a big IF) they actully go through with this. The radiation from the sun alone will give them cancer so quick it will literally be a death sentence.

Fascinating, informative, not too surprised by what he said, almost expected and a great speaker.
I say not too surprised since God said .."the earth hath he given to the children of men" plutonian falls into this category. Once you leave the confinements of the earth...that's when you'll have problems.

Interesting, I can think of some reasons why I'd be persuaded to agree with you. We'll have to see if we are indeed earth-bound due to some fundamental reasons, at least for quite a long time. It's still worth a shot to try to make it to another planet, just so we know what happens.

My friend Dennis used to work for NASA.
I asked him once about a possible manned mission to Mars; here's what he told me:
- Once you fly past the Van Allen Radiation Belts and the other magnetospheric shields of the Earth, your radiation troubles are just beginning! Humans just cannot take a steady or heavy diet of EM radiation or particle radioactivity, and the only way to accommodate this fatal weakness is to shield the hell outta their spacecraft to a point where it's damn-near too heavy to launch/propel and/or map-out a trajectory to the destination that minimizes exposure to known rad-threats. THIS is an insurmountable wall.
- We also have no interplanetary propulsion systems to accelerate any human-habitable spacecraft-- even theoretically-- to more than a tenth the speed of light (heavy-ion drive), which is not fast enough to get anywhere beyond Mars for any practical purpose-- another insurmountable wall!
- That no/low-gravity conditions cause calcium to leach-out of the teeth and bones and plate-out (plaque) into the blood vessels and tissues is ancient knowledge. But, the Russians on MIR have contributed an even more fatal prohibition against long spaceflights or extended stays on Mars or the Moon: The human immunity system simply breaks down outside an Earth-like gravitational field. T-cells, cytokines... all that stuff just begins shrinking in cellular population. No one is exactly sure why. Combine this with the zero-level of planetary shielding and resultant radiation bombardments to be endured on Mars and the Moon and we have yet another insurmountable wall-- maybe the tallest one of all!
- Making or recycling drinking water may be one trick, but getting a reliable supply of solid food will probably be what ultimately dooms any outpost of explorers, tourists or colonists.
- So we could probably get a high-risk mission or two, to Mars and back, under our belts. However, NO single nation could afford the whole bill if said mission(s) implement the rules/bureaucrat-heavy form of safety programs that NASA has imposed on manned-space missions to date. It's serious overkill! But there's no compelling reason to do any of that anymore in view of the above-listed insurmountable walls.

I think a sufficient magnetic field around the craft would work as well, just like it does for earth. You'd probably need a superconductor to make that kind of field.

NASA is actually working on faster-than-light travel, of course who knows if it is possible to implement.

Magnetic fields can be an answer, but to generate one strong enough with available power is the $10,000 question. One that is light enough to be lifted from the earth's gravity well and also be powerful enough to do the job. Methinks the beast does not exist.
Edit: I know it can be done, lifting a nuke pile into orbit, but it would need to be a thermocouple type and not a steam driven generator (would need maintenance for bearings ) totally closed system using the cold of space for cooling. (max energy but way to the max heavy)
