It's against the "law" to conceal your face anywhere and at any time in public in Australia. It has been for a long time AFAIK.

There's laws against masks in the US too. Don't know if it's every state though.

Perhaps the steep sentence is to deter the folks who start riots, from peaceful protests.
There's professional orgs out there who's one goal, regardless of the reason for the demonstration, is to incite riots. They don't care about the cause of the protest, they just want to turn it violent.
LE trains for this, to spot such folks, fyi. This sentence seems like another way to deter that type of activity.

Yep. COINTELPRO specializes in creating riots among peaceful demonstrations.

Can't allow people to thwart the retina scanning and facial recognition software on all the damn camera systems.

Maybe I am a old fart (in training) but I have always believed that if one needs a mask to hide behind socially ether doing a crime or making a political statement is a coward of the first rank bar none.
It is called standing up to ones beliefs out front and in person, and not hiding. (sorta reminds me of one on this forum) ;D
Be yourself or hide behind a mask which is what I like to call being a "cockroach" and being untruthful and being a coward.
Flame suit on! ;D

The CBC article says wearing a mask at a riot or unlawful assembly. Not wearing a mask in public.
The thing that bothers me about the bill is the unlawful assembly part. Does this mean if they say you can't protest and you wear a mask then they nail you for this?
