Until yesterday, I had 3 chickens.
Last night, only 2 showed up to be put back in the coop. I went outside and looked around about 5 times. The 3rd bird just did not show up.
All I can do is wait, to see if the 3rd one re-appears - or not.
I read up on Chicken Broodiness, and it sounds like Rhode Island Red's do sometimes "get broody". Other owners describe similar behavior - the Chicken just disappears for a day or 3.
I'm wondering - hawk attack ? I was home most of the time the chickens are out & I have really good hearing. I would hear most animal altercations. Unless it was a skunk or raccoon grabbing one of my chickens around the neck and hauling it away silently.
I'm hoping Chicken #3 shows back up. Either that, or I hope her death was quick and merciful.
Until then, I have 2 good chickens, and one Ghost Chicken. :(
