The use of silver in medicine is as old as medicine it self but how it works has been a mystery ever since.
Hippocrates is known to have used it to treat ulcers and wounds, the Romans almost certainly knew of its healing properties, its use continued through the middle ages and up to the present day.
In the antibiotic age, interest in silver may have waned a little. But with urgent need to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria, there is resurgence in its uses
Now, a team led by James Collins, a biomedical engineer at Boston University in Massachusetts, has described how silver can disrupt bacteria, and shown that the ancient treatment could help to deal with the thoroughly modern scourge of antibiotic resistance.
The work is published in Science Translational Medicine
Here is silver’s multi-pronged approach: first, silver sticks very strongly to sulfur, found in parts of proteins. These sulfur groups normally bond to each other in proteins, holding them together and keeping the protein folded up in its correct shape.
But if silver interacts with sulfur then the protein cannot fold correctly, and thus it cannot do its job. Next silver interferes with how bacteria use iron. Iron is often held in the places it is needed by binding to sulfur. And since silver also interacts with sulfur it stops the iron doing so.
Finally, silver causes bacteria to produce extremely toxic substances called reactive oxygen species. These go on to cause damage inside the cell, harming the DNA, proteins and even the membrane that surround cells.
The net result of this silver onslaught is bacteria with severely damaged defences. Most importantly the membranes and walls that surround it are leakier after the silver treatment. Once weakened, they are much more susceptible to conventional antibiotics.
Collins and his team found that silver — in the form of dissolved ions — attacks bacterial cells in two main ways: it makes the cell membrane more permeable, and it interferes with the cell’s metabolism, leading to the overproduction of reactive, and often toxic, oxygen compounds.
Both mechanisms could potentially be harnessed to make today’s antibiotics more effective against resistant bacteria, Collins says.
Colloidal silver was used by doctors in the early 20th century, but after the development of more modern antibiotics, its use dwindled. Since the 1990s, however, there has been a resurgence of its use amid claims that it is a cure-all.
Many antibiotics are thought to kill their targets by producing reactive oxygen compounds, and Collins and his team showed that when boosted with a small amount of silver these drugs could kill between 10 and 1,000 times as many bacteria.
The increased membrane permeability also allows more antibiotics to enter the bacterial cells, which may overwhelm the resistance mechanisms that rely on shuttling the drug back out.
That disruption to the cell membrane also increased the effectiveness of vancomycin, a large-molecule antibiotic, on Gram-negative bacteria — which have a protective outer coating. Gram-negative bacterial cells can often be impenetrable to antibiotics made of larger molecules.
Collins says that he and his colleagues saw good results in mice using non-toxic amounts of silver. But, he adds, there are ways to reduce the risk even further. “We’re also encouraging people to look at what features of silver caused the helpful effects, so they can look for non-toxic versions,” he says.

Thanks Ponce. I’ve been making colloidal silver for just over 15 years. I use a Silvergen machine with two .9999 pure Canadian Mapleleaf ounce rounds. One pair of these rounds will probably last me decades. I make it and give it to friends and family for free. Basically, it only costs me a dollar a gallon to make it since the silver converted into colloidal silver is so minute, the electricity needed is negligible and the steam distilled water is $1 a gallon.
I have talked with doctors and others in the medical profession for years about colloidal silver and have always drawn a blank. Most had never heard of it; I was and am still astounded by their ignorance.

With the recent rise of deadly drug-resistant bacteria in the United States, once potent antibiotics are losing their luster as they increasingly becoming powerless in the fight against these dangerous infections. *But new research suggests that an extra ingredient could help boost antibiotics’ overall effectiveness.
All they need is a bit of “bling.”
A new study from Boston University revealed that adding silver to antibiotics enhanced the drugs’ abilities to fight off lethal infections in mice. *Even more encouragingly, the added silver component also helped make an antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria more sensitive to antibiotics once again.
Silver has been used for thousands of years as an antimicrobial agent and has been included in wound dressings and bandages to inhibit the growth of infectious microorganisms. *In this study, researchers wanted to gain a more comprehensive understanding of why silver acts this way against bacteria.
“We found that (silver) was affecting the membrane of gram-negative bacteria, such as E. coli, making their membranes more permeable,” study author Jim Collins, the William F. Warren Distinguished Professor at Boston University and a faculty member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, told FoxNews.com.
Collins explained that the silver also interacts with central metabolism, leading to the disruption of iron homeostasis. *In turn, this causes the production of molecules known as reactive oxygen species (ROS), which ultimately damage the bacterial cell’s DNA and enzymes.
“We recognized that one or both of these mechanisms could be exploited to enhance the killing efficacy of antibiotics,” Collins said.
Along with his colleague J. Ruben Morones-Ramirez, a former post-doctoral fellow in Collins’ laboratory who is currently a professor at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon in Mexico, Collins and his team conducted a series of tests on the antibiotic-silver combination in vitro (in petri dishes) and in vivo (in mouse models). *
Through their tests, the team showed that just a small amount of silver made E. coli bacteria between 10 and 1,000 times more sensitive to commonly prescribed antibiotics, such as penicillin. In the mice models, Collins and his team demonstrated that silver was able to change the membrane permeability of gram-negative bacteria. *This enabled a large antibiotic called vancomycin, which has normally been used to fight gram-positive bacteria, to be effective against gram-negative as well.
Most importantly, the researchers showed that silver helped the antibiotic tetracycline fight a previously resilient strain of E. coli. *This signified that the combination of silver and antibiotics could be used to resensitize antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

“Overall, what we show is that small amounts of silver, non-toxic levels, can be used in conjunction with commonly used antibiotics to treat persistent infection and to treat bio-film based infections, which are problematic for medical implants,” Collins said.
The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as deadly MRSA or Clostridium difficile, has been considered a major health threat by the Food and Drug Administration. *To fight this growing problem, the FDA has called for the reduction of drug-resistant bacteria in foods and animals used in food production, as well as the creation of new antibiotics to combat these deadly infections.
But the study’s findings indicate that the development of new drugs may not be necessary, Collins said. *The team suggested silver could be used as coating on existing antibiotics or incorporated into medical implants, to help prevent or eradicate infections that often occur during such medical procedures.
“Can we make our antibiotic arsenal stronger using these engineering methods?” Collins said. *“The number of antibiotic-resistant strains has been growing, and the number of new antibiotics being made and approved are dramatically dropping. So instead of discovering and developing novel antibiotics, could we figure out ways to make the ones we have better?”
The research was published June 19 in Science Translational Medicine.

Colloidal silver has been denigrated for a long time and finally when they cannot any longer make patients better with their various types of penicillin, they turn to colloidal silver to save the day.
Funny, but doesn’t this sound parallel to fiat currency’s weaknesses and failings returning to the tried and true intermediary of exchange, gold and silver ?

This outfit makes somewhat pricey bandages and bandaids. They say the pain from wounds stops almost as soon as the bandage goes on because of the conductivity of the dressing simulating skin covering the flesh.

the implication is that Silver acts as a Catalyst. i.e., that it is not going into solution, as would occur with a solution of weak nitric acid.
this makes me wonder about a humongous metal sponge, silver plated - would that be an useful tool for a town who wanted to purify their water. obviously the metal would have to be selected and the plating solution rinsed. the overall objective being to get a HUGE surface area of silver, then pump water past it to get the biocidal effects of the silver.
i still think those rags that the supermarket puts in the chicken packages are interesting. i hear they contain silver. but apparently, a very tiny amount.

wish you dumb asses would quite claiming you can make collodial silver at home. that's bullshit.
silver solutions made "at home" is ionic silver with just a few accidental collodial size particles that fall out during ionization process. maybe 10ppb. anyone can make ionic silver and use it to treat whatever they want to pour it on. i had a buddy who had an infected ingrown toenail. he swore by it and made a quart a day to soak his damn big toe the 9volt method everyone is getting lathered up on here about.
others use the 9volt ionic bath for mouthwash. stuff like that. but it is not collodial silver. collodial silver is nano sized, actual, solid, 3 dimensional silver particles which can be seen under sufficient magnification because they are silver solids.
i seriously doubt any bozo on this forum has ever seen an ion, especially the bozos who claim they make collodial silver with 9volt batteries and silver coins.
talk about placebo effect! They are making ionic silver.

Believe it or not it is quite possible to make a colloidal silver product at home.
Having worked for several years at a brass foundry I can tell you that the fumes that come off the furnace are collected in the baghouse air handling unit and the minerals present are sold to feed producers. These minerals are no bigger than smoke particles.
If I wanted to make actual colloidal silver I would do so with a silver ingot, a silver electrode and a 10-40 watt tube type transmitter (radio frequency ... around 30 mhz). Strike an arc and draw air by the electrode, use a cyclone precipitator and filter. Keep water flowing in the precipitator and monitor the water with a dissolved solids meter.
The whole thing could be built for a couple hundred bux.
Or you might just spray water on the arc to collect the fumes.

i can hardly wait to sit around a silver "foundry," (commercial or home-brew), arc a few things, collect smoke in god knows what bag, ash the bag complete with carbon contaminants, whirl it a few times in that cyclone precipitator and call that good internal medicine.
oh, and what price did you say the home model of the cyclone precipitator and replacable filters were, plus the dissolved solids meter? surely you weren't thinking that dissolved solids doo-dad sold at target in the housewares/water pitcher department?

Looks like there might be a couple ways you can make true colloidal silver at home. One way is to use a reducing agent, and another way is to use the Bredig process, which is I think what palani was talking about
