The plane carrying whistleblower Edward Snowden has landed at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. The former CIA contract
or, who left Hong Kong in a bid to elude US extradition on espionage charges, is on his way to a ‘democratic country’ via Russia.

Earlier, a spokesperson from the Hong Kong government confirmed that Edward Snowden had "legally and voluntarily" left the country.

“Mr. Edward Snowden left Hong Kong today (June 23) on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel,” said the Hong Kong government in a press release. The statement also said the documents for Snowden’s extradition submitted by Washington “did not fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law.”

“As the HKSAR Government has yet to have sufficient information to process the request for a provisional warrant of arrest, there is no legal basis to restrict Mr. Snowden from leaving Hong Kong.”

WikiLeaks legal aid Whistleblowing organization WikiLeaks has rallied behind Snowden and said they are assisting him in his bid for political asylum in a “democratic country.” The group announced on Twitter that they helped obtain “travel documents” and ensured his safe exit from Hong Kong. A member of the WikiLeaks legal team is also accompanying the NSA leaker on his flight to Moscow.

FLASH: Mr. Snowden is currently over Russian airspace accompanied by WikiLeaks legal advisors.

A source from Aeroflot told Interfax that Snowden is on flight SU213 to Moscow, landing on Sunday afternoon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin was unaware of Snowden’s plans to fly to MoscowThe US has filed an extradition order against Snowden for espionage, theft and conversion of government property.

It is understood that Moscow will not be Snowden’s final destination, he could potentially fly on to Ecuador or Iceland where he has allegedly applied for asylum. A diplomatic source told the Russian news agency Itar-Tass that no request for asylum in Russia had been received from the former CIA employee.

Citing a source close to Snowden, Russian news agency Interfax reported that the whistleblower’s final destination will be Venezuela with a transfer in Havana, Cuba. He will reportedly be on flight SU150 to Havana, leaving Moscow on Monday and then on flight V-04101 to Caracas.

“He chose such a complicated route in the hope that he would not be arrested on the way to his final destination of Venezuela,” the source told Interfax.

'More whistleblowers will follow' Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden, WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange and Bradley Manning, the world is likely to hear more about the actual state of things says Pepe Escobar, Asia Times correspondent in Hong Kong talking with RT.
“Definitely, we’re going to have a collection of Assanges, Mannings and Snowdens from now on, especially from the US tech geeks who are extremely uncomfortable with this Orwellian panopticon surveillance thing: not only in the US as we’ve seen some revelations on Britain as well. It is an Anglo-American thing. Of course everybody is involved in cyber wars, but the forefront is the US,” Pepe Escobar explains.

I wonder if Snowden has enough data to blackmail the whole lot of them in the Gov't who are out to get him. Knowledge is power. If the NSA, specifically Keith Alexander, can blackmail Obama and the congress, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Snowden cannot do it as well to protect himself. Russia was a good choice for him. I think he'll stay there for the duration because Putin is not a pushover for the thugs in Washington DC.

The longer Snowden remains free, the more likelihood there is that an army of whistleblowers will emerge and make the whole rotten surveillance tyranny dissolve. There is a great irony going on here. The NSA also spies on all the politicians, collecting dirt on them first and foremost. But most of the politicians are either to dirty or too dumb to get the upper hand on the NSA. So, you have the politicians who are being blackmailed abetting the blackmailers in prosecuting someone who stands up to the blackmailers. Kinda like the Stockholm syndrome where the victims identify with the hostage taker, but on a political level. We have really terribly corrupt politicians in America, and this exposes it somewhat. Russell Tice also exposed it.

The .gov stooges may not be that eager to piss Snowden off, of course they have to go through the motions but unless they can actually get their hands on him, by whatever means, he's a major threat to all of them. They probably don't know exactly what he knows or better yet what he doesn't know. Snowden could be a keystroke away from damning all of them.

If he is as smart as they claim he is, there is a set-up somewhere such that if he does not report into one of several servers somewhere, the data will be released spontaneously.

I hope he goes to iceland.

God help him if he goes any where in South America

if he goes to South American, the chances of him getting the Scopalomine treatment, either as a robbery or as part of kidnapping back to the US, the chance goes way up.

that's what happened to Mike Ruppert in Venezuela. he arrived in the country with a pocketfull of gold, i think Sovereigns. got Scopalomine'd, lost a few $K, then went to New York to recuperate.

unfortunately losing a lot of his personal Fight in the process.

i think he started out as an effective 9-11 whistleblower, then from 2007 on deteriorated to a "let's avoid the physical evidence" stance which has the net effect of letting Israel off the hook.

The plane carrying whistleblower Edward Snowden has landed at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. The former NSA contractor, who left Hong Kong in a bid to elude US extradition on espionage charges, is on his way to a ‘third country’ via Russia.

Reuters reports that the Ecuadorean ambassador to Russia, Patricio Chavez, has arrived at Sheremetyevo airport, telling the press that he expects to meet with Snowden.
Shortly thereafter, Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino confirmed via twitter that Snowden had applied for asylum. (http://rt.com/news/ecuador-asylum-request-snowden-135/)
Interfax news agency is citing an unnamed source in Sheremetyevo airport management, saying that Snowden is still at the airport.

"Snowden is a transit passenger, his next flight is to Cuba, he remains in the airport complex – where he’s supposed to be, waiting for the next flight," the source said.

A source in the Aeroflot company told the agency that the whistleblower, who is accompanied by WikiLeaks representative, Sarah Harrison, has rented a suit at the airport’s «V-Express» Capsule Hotel.

“He arrived. But he can’t leave the terminal because he doesn’t have a Russian visa,” the source said.

Two cars with diplomatic license plates of Ecuador – the country named among Snowden’s possible destinations – were spotted at Sheremetyevo airport.

RT’s source reported a doctor from the Ecuadorian embassy in Moscow has examined Snowden on his arrival in the Russian capital.

the CIA, MI-6, and Mossad are all capable of catching Mr. Snowden.

but i guess they're 'playing nice' - temporarily.

i wonder to what degree he might have modified his appearance. e.g. aging 40 years would be very convenient at a time like this.

what can you do to make your skin wrinkle over the period of about a week ? besides go out with a high-maintenance woman :)

yes everything on the tee vee is for entertainment purposes only. It should not be considered fact. Even if it shows moving pictures that appear to be based on real events, their presentation is purely for entertainment only. We know this because the narrative that accompanies the moving pictures is usually not related to the events being viewed.

I think Putin would actually have no problem turning Snowden over to Washington in return for a few favors from Washington.

The problem is he can't really do that because it would be such a bad political move. He's already been demonized, he already offered for him to go to Russia, and to turn him over now would just make him look really really bad.

He can either get a small favor from Washington in return for making him look really bad, or he can make himself look not so bad but also antagonistic to the US (which he doesn't want to appear as either). Not so great either way. If we agree to stop arming syria, he'd probably turn him over. But he knows that it would just be a lie and we'd keep arming them anyways.

It seems to me the best move would be to get him on a plane to cuba asap. It might be delayed though because of furious bargaining. Perhaps a really big contract with the oil company Putin chairs which is struggling? There are lots of bargaining chips but the political fallout is just so great.

All true!

But imagine all the bribing and blackmailing going on w/the state dept/cia/justice dept/ect, trying to get whatever he has, or have him sent to a more corporative country for extradition.

Putin could play his cards well and ca$h-in on this.

A scenario could play out, whereby Snowden's aircraft requires an emergency landing over a prearranged country?

And Putin acts like he didn't play into it.

Edward Snowden recibió del Gobierno de Ecuador un documento de refugiado para poder viajar dado que Estados Unidos ha revocado su pasaporte, según dijo hoy el fundador de WikiLeaks, Julian Assange. (http://www.eluniverso.com/noticias/2013/06/24/nota/1064486/julian-assange-dice-que-snowden-esta-sano-salvo-su-destino-es)

Ed Snowden Travelling With A Geneva Convention Passport

Snowden "recibió un documento de refugiado de paso de parte del Gobierno de Ecuador", explicó Assange en una conferencia telefónica con periodistas en la que aclaró que eso no implica que ese país ya le haya concedido el asilo solicitado.

A refugee travel document (also called a 1951 Convention travel document or Geneva passport) is a travel document issued to a refugee by the state in which she or he normally resides allowing him or her to travel outside that state and to return there. Refugees are unlikely to be able to obtain passports from their state of nationality (from which they have sought asylum) and therefore need travel documents so that they might engage in international travel.

OT, but we've been talking about .gov spying, google, facebook for over 10. What "documents" has he released? Other than a video I haven't seen anything in black and white. I was initially impressed, but then my radar went up about something not eing right. I know I don't trust anyone.

From what I understand, basically a high-level powerpoint presentation of the PRISM program, as well as some documents specifically about how the NSA targeted chinese civilian infrastructure. Maybe a couple more. Plus, he's made a number of comments and claims that are credible even though I don't think he released any documents. For example, he said the NSA hacks backbone routers. He said he could have wiretapped anybody. Stuff like that. From there, additional stuff came out due to questions that congress started asking and additional information snowballed that Snowden didn't release himself.

The documents haven't "named names" yet, but the blowback has been very real. Our credibility has taken a massive hit. We were humiliated by him going public. We were humiliated by Hong Kong. We were humiliated by our hypocrisy towards China's hacking. We may be humiliated by Russia, depending on what happens there. Our director of the NSA was caught openly perjuring. No trust is left.

World leaders everywhere are asking questions, demanding answers. Their constitutions explicitly guarantee electronic privacy, unlike ours which is too old. We broke their laws, violated their sovereignty. This article discusses the international reaction so far:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/06/23/1218102/-US-NSA-Accused-of-Criminal-Privacy-Violations-in-Dozens-of-Nations-Snowden-Blowback

Where is this all leading? I don't know.

Putin confirms Snowden in Moscow airport but denies extradition – live

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/25/edward-snowden-russia

Quote from Putin:

Assange and Snowden consider themselves human rights activists and say they’re fighting for the spread of information,” Putin said. “Ask yourself this: should you hand these people over so they’ll be put in prison?

In any case, I’d rather not deal with such questions, because anyway it’s like shearing a pig – lots of screams but little wool,” he added, cryptically.
