This should probably go into prospecting but...

Auction house down here in Oz has some surplus military gear going to auction. They have a huge number of metal detectors.

Model: MineLab F1A4

When I was looking at them, I thought the thing I was looking at was the detector. It looks like a large flat panel so I thought it might be one of those walk by type detectors, kind of like at the super market for shoplifters.

They are actually the cases, which look like pelican cases. The units are metal detectors.

Here is Jose receiving his detectors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6XkMXcScuk

I think these are being sold for about $250.

ah so that was you? C'mon Ponce, you can tell us.... you used to go down there and chuck those weights around like they were nothing and get all the bikini babes.

but yes, that's what I was thinking. A trip down to the beach for a little detecting although a friend of mine is pretty keen on finding lasseters reef (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasseter%27s_Reef).

LMAO, big kid under the christmas tree. I felt as excited as he was opening that thing up, seriously laughing and wanting to see it. I want one.

Without knowing the specs on the MD, $250 seems like it would be a good deal for a military grade detector. I love my detector, it's a great hobby and while most times you don't find anything exciting, every now and then you do.

what a great deal! any more of those for sale? are you willing to bid, ship and add a modest surcharge for your sharp eye and willingness to ship stateside? i'd love to have a pair of those for me and my buddy.

It is a MineLab. They are the best of the best, top of the line models go for 5 plus K.

$250 seems like a screaming good deal. I don't know for sure, the specs either, but I'd research it indeed.

Glass, did you pull the plug on this one?

I haven't pulled the trigger yet. These are listed on an online auction run by a bricksnmortar auction house. There is not much activity on these and maybe half of these are unbid. The ones that are bid are only 1 bid at $225. So I don't know what the price is but I was figuring on them going unreserved. I can't see any info on that.

To bid online with them requires $500 bond first. I'll have a talk to them today about it and see if they are unreserved. Otherwise they might end up in live auctions 1st week July. Other side of the country. If they are going this low price I will grab one, maybe a couple if they were quickly sellable. Is the bond that's the catch.

ok so more info. I got registered on their system. They waived the $500 bond fee because it's a Defence contract. ???

There is a reserve, however all bids under the reserve at close of auction will be presented to DoD for their decision.

So its possible the bids will be in the $200-$250 range. Whether they get approved at that I do not know.

I asked about export restrictions as well. Seeing as these are ex defence I thought they might carry an export restriction. They may do but I would need to check.

Yes tongue in cheek but to save Serpo having to pick himself up off the floor to fill everyone in, Lassetter claimed to have found a large vein of gold just on the NT and Western Australian border. Wiki explains the story. Guy could have been nuts or been driven nuts. Told several versions of a story about finding a huge deposit of gold out there. Eventually went back on an expedition but was dumped and left for dead. Rescued by Aboriginies but offended them. Eventually did die out there in bush.

ok well competition got pretty frantic towards the end of the auction. I ended up bidding on about 6 units. I was hoping to score maybe 2 and possibly 3 units.

I managed to get one unit for $403 FOB. I think they had a low reserve because they sent me an invoice at close of auction. Already paid for and waiting for a pickup notice. Probably will be a day or two because funds need to clear.

Not the best unit the had but looks like just a few scuffs. The cleaner/unused units sold for at least $500 each. I dropped out of those after we hit $375.00.

I didn't get the torpedo recovery vehicle. Probably just as well. I think it's a bit big for the bath tub.

The mine detector showed up today. The delivery guy was a bit worried what I wanted with a mine detector. I told him it was to detect gold mines. He was happy enough with that explanation. Those are the best sort he said.

I can tell you this thing is pretty beat up. Looks nothing like the image presented. Not anywhere as good condition as Jose's unit.

All the bits are there except for the rechargable batteries. They are D Cell so thats not a biggie. I can score some of those. There are some regular d cells in the kit which have just enough power to crank this thing up and run the test sequence. Seems ok. I'll grab some new batteries so I can see that it actually detects something.

It has to be a hoot or not to live in your country, and have other thoughts beside the hive mind....I can see it as a grin and a pain in the ass.. And both at the same time.....

yeah I don't know sometimes. Aussies are good because we have a strong grasp of sarcasm. We use it all the time. And ribbing, ragging or shit stirring. So you can hardly say a sentence without either dishing it up or getting served.

I'm a square peg since maybe 5 years old. Telling grown ups they were insane. Seems I was right all along. I had one of those conversations this morning about the legallity of income taxation. People get fidgetty when I talk about those subjects.

So there's limits. This mine detector in it's camo green case will go nicely with my ex navy 80mm artillery crates. They always raise a few eyebrows when people see them. As do the ammo cans. People conclude things sometimes which might surprise you or not. all this army stuff about this guy must be ex military. Mayhaps one way, mayhaps the other. Best just to leave them wondering and concluding on their own.
