Former congressman Anthony Weiner is gaining ground in the race for New York City mayor, according to two new public opinion polls.

A new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows the disgraced Democrat, who resigned two years ago amid a sexting scandal, is in a virtual tie with City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and ex-city comptroller William Thompson for his party's nomination.

Quinn leads with 19% support from Democratic voters, followed by Weiner at 17% and Thompson with 16%, in the poll — all within the survey's margin of error. Quinn's support was at 25% in Quinnipiac's May 22 survey, which was released the day Weiner jumped into the race.

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) said Monday that former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) shouldn’t be mayor of New York City and that he’d personally fire a public official for the kind of online behavior Weiner engaged in.








“You’re not going to vote for Anthony Weiner, can you just say that now?,” MSNBC host Chris Matthews asked Spitzer. “You don’t think he should be mayor of New York.”

“Fair point, that’s correct,” Spitzer responded.

Matthews also asked Spitzer, who is looking to revive his own political career as New York comptroller, if he would fire a public official found to be sexting if he’s elected.

“I think the answer is yes,” Spitzer said. “We have had a number of instances over the years where inevitably, of course, municipal employees, state employees have used computers and the like for improper purposes and there is an appropriate sanction for that and there should be.”

Spitzer resigned as governor of New York in 2008 after admitting he solicited prostitutes.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Monday, Weiner has fallen to fourth in the New York mayoral race after leading in the polls just over a week ago.

Weiner has been plagued by a new round of revelations that he continued exchanging lewd messages with women on the Internet long after a similar scandal drove him from office in 2011.
