If any one gives this a shot, try adding a little water and salt to the mix. It should lower the freezing point of the water, dropping the temperature over all nad helping the ice last longer. In theory anyways. It may only be a couple degree change in practice

cool little idea, but wouldn't it be more efficient and cheaper to just buy a small 5000 BTU window unit AC ($120) ? $30 or more for 7-8 hours of cool air seems a little pricey to me

oh I'm not knocking it, but you do have to plug that fan in somewhere so I thought why not just plug in an AC?

You can do a similar thing with a 12 V car radiator fan ($5 second hand), thermal monitor circuit (op-amp and thermistor) which switches a darlington transistor or JFET/MOSFET (also $5) that powers the fan, combine with a towel soaking in sea water, bury partly in the ground and you can keep about 3 to 4 degree C WIHTOUT ICE, all run off an old reconditioned car battery charged with a 20 W solar panel and you have nearly FREE refrigeration for over 20 years!

yep, they work allright when the winds blowing...
Solar is the best IMHO, costs more but produces each and EVERY day without fail. I have about ten 20 W pannels and six or so 40 W and a few 80 and 120 watters tucked away in the shed for use when the times right (might look at a handfull of 200 W for the shed) I also bought out all the stock from the old dick smith stores around town when they went concept, I paid next to nothing for TONS of components so I'm all set for the next 20 years to just keep buidling solar powered stuff or whatever comes to mind, I'm building a casting machine as of the moment (I have two small boys which i intend to home school at certain intervals) I also have two 300 W wind turbines I bought from Jaycar for $350 a piece - bargain, though their not installed as of yet. i just finished building my shed, which is about 7m x 7m, but its 3m high at the walls and 3.6 at the apex and I have built tones of shelving up to the roof to store heaps of stuff I've accumulted. I love doing this sort of thing, its the future for me and the boys...looking forward to it I gotta say!

Agree ,
I visit NZ now and then and the very best is water energy as it runs all the time ,although lot harder in OZ to find water like this.

yeah they are lucky, I go to the south island like once every 18 months, my partner is a Kiwi. Sometimes it gets dry there too, last summer was pretty darn dry all over I hear. Where abouts in oz are you Serpo?

Good point Willie, but I have been wanting to do some work in my garage in Texas where it get's over 100 degrees for most of the summer. I wonder if it would at least make the garage comfortable to work in.

Have you guys ever thought about insulation? Building like the old days, thick walls, high pitched roofs,
remember adobes buildings.
I don't require and AC , wouldn't use my solar to run it anyhow, Maybe building passive is a idea... or converting what you have?

I was going to say the same thing. If you want to keep a large area cool, this would be the first point of attack. Wool has gotten really cheap here in Australia over the last few years, it is an excellent insulator, fire resistant and non hazardous. Often times garages have walls with sun exposure, they are the last consideration designers think of in terms of heating and cooling. If you have exposed brick walls then overhangs over windows or even a large awning will keep the heat off of it. Also try a whirly bird in the roof to vent the hot air. Once you fix all these areas then with alittle AC you may actually keep the garage down to say a comfortable 23 C on a hot day.

I live in a mud (adobe) I built myself......havnt got AC either
In Asia they have some buildings made of brick ect and these never get to cool down so you really need AC.
I got sick from an AC once over there and try to avoid using them. Best in the tropics is the traditional type dwelling which lets the air flow thru and most you need is a fan.

Mostly Dunedin, but also spend time in Christchurch. Marlborough is nice and wet, gets pretty cold there too, is the land a multiple occupancy type deal or just multi ownership?
We were looking at land up North in Takaka but its getting harder to find these days and prices have gone up a bit.

Ok, is one am and just finished making one and it works, only had four dujikies of ice to test it with, I simply place it on my coffee table pointing in my direction and is like having a central air working for me.....have it connected to my converter from my solar.......I also get cool air into my house from under my house, I have a nylon mesh over the hole so that the bugs can't come in.

Ponce your the man, maybe you need to add some salt to the ice. It will make the thing a whole lot cooler and last longer...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooling_bath
−20 °C can be achieved with a 1 to 3 ratio of sodium chloride to ice.
Maybe add a little water (not too much though, enough for a slight slurry) too

they use this type of thing to pump cold air into V8 racing drivers helmets down here.
you could hook up something like this to it.

Its complicated ,we fought the council years ago ,a group of us and won.
Now having a sub division isnt important because all you can do with a sub division is sell it.If you have a connection with a place you never will sell.
Every where is cold now since BP screwed up the gulf stream.
Top of the south island is the best.

Only mt Hutt in the South island , my daughter worked on a ski field for a season near Mt. Ruapehu , a ski field on an active volcano.
It was another volcano near by ,cant remember the name ,but she said they would have emergency drills often in case the volcano erupted.
