Pike Dies After Apparently Chomping Down On More Than It Could Chew

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) –

Although Julie Collman has fished on Saganaga Lake for more than 20 years, she hasn’t seen anything quite as bizarre as what she found in the lake’s waters last Friday.

While boating down the Sag Corridor with her daughter and a friend, Collman said she saw a 37-inch-long northern pike dead in the water with a sucker lodged head-first in its mouth.

The pike had apparently made a fatal mistake in trying to gobble up the 3-pound sucker. The sucker’s mouth, Collman said, was in the pike’s stomach, and a third of its body was sticking out from the pike’s jaws.

Collman took the two fishes from the lake. Now, they’re in her freezer in Grand Marais. She intends to keep the two together, mounted just as they were found.

I could tell a pike from a bass by the fight, they both hit hard, but the pike quickly gives up and swim towards the boat, but all hell breaks loose when he is up against the boat, and he puts in a good last ditch effort. Bass are like salt water blue fish, they never give up the fight.

Americans seldom eat pike, but it is a delicacy in Europe.

Reminds me of a big catfish I once hooked into. I was reeling in my bait, when wham, the fight was on.

Several minutes and as I got him to the boat, he opened his mouth, and my pool snapped back. Turns out I initially caught a small bluegill. The catfish then ate the small bluegill as I was reeling him in. We had played tug of war with the bluegill up to the boat, when the catfish gave up and opened his mouth.

That little bluegill lived, and I gained a respect for catfish. Tough fish, to do something like that.
