Twenty two employees from the media company Al-Jazeera resigned on Monday after they accused the company of airing “biased coverage” (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/jul/9/we-aired-lies-al-jazeera-staff-quit-over-biased-eg/) of the on-going political upheaval in Egypt.
Among the employees who left is Karem Mahmoud, a former anchor for Al-Jazeera.
“I felt that there were errors in the way the coverage was done, especially that now in Egypt we are going through a critical phase that requires a lot of auditing in terms of what gets broadcasted,” Mahmoud said. “My colleagues have also resigned for the same reason.”
“The [Al-Jazeera] management in Doha provokes sedition among the Egyptian people and has an agenda against Egypt and other Arab countries,” he added.
Former Al-Jazeera correspondent Haggag Salama, another resigned employee, accused the network of “airing lies and misleading viewers.” Another former employee, journalist Abdel Latif el-Menawy, called Al-Jazeera a “propaganda channel” (http://gulfnews.com/news/region/egypt/al-jazeera-staff-resign-after-biased-egypt-coverage-1.1206924) the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood was a favored and supported group by overthrown president Mohammed Morsi.
“Al Jazeera turned itself into a channel for the Muslim Brotherhood group,” el-Menawy told the news outlet Al Arabiya (http://english.alarabiya.net/en/media/2013/07/09/Al-Jazeera-employees-in-Egypt-quit-over-editorial-line-.html). “They are far away from being professional. When the Muslim Brotherhood collapsed, they continued to play the role.”
Al-Jazeera released a statement on the resignations today.
“Following the recent squeeze on media in Egypt, some Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr staff have decided to leave,” the statement said. “We understand the reasons for some employees feeling they need to move on, including those with partisan political opinions.”
“Throughout our history we’ve had to cope with crackdowns. This unfortunately is nothing new. We will carry on doing our job regardless - upholding the highest standards of journalism, covering all angles of events in Egypt with balance and integrity.”
