On September 10, 2013, Colorado voters in two districts will be able to let their voices be heard.
Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has finally set the dates for the recall elections of State Senate President John Morse and first term State Senator Angela Giron according to a CNN (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/07/18/colorado-sets-recall-elections-for-two-pro-gun-control-lawmakers/) report.

The setting of the dates follows a court loss for both candidates yesterday when a judge ruled that the recall paperwork was lawful and the process could move forward.
According to CNN,

This is a positive development,” NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said in a statement to CNN. “We look forward to working with voters in these legislative districts in Colorado who initiated this effort.”

Both senators could allow the Democratic party to retain their seats by resigning prior to elections which would allow for the appointment of two new Democratic senators to take their place as recall elections target an individual, not a particular seat.

The lawmakers are facing the recall effort due to their support of strict gun control laws which passed in Colorado earlier this year. Many saw the laws as being too anti-gun for Colorado, which has been a “purple” state in recent times, being seen as socially progressive on some issues, such as marijuana legalization, but many feel that residents still maintain a strong history of firearm ownership and gun rights.

The recall effort is certainly going to be watched at the national level, with many seeing it as a referendum on gun control. Anti-gun advocates have been saying that pro-gun supporters can expect a backlash at the polls, and the Colorado recall elections may be the first chance to put that to the test. Many are actually predicting the opposite and think that pro-gun activists may be able to defeat the Democratic incumbents.
