An additional 61 tons of silver was found on the SS Gairsoppa shipwreck. Odyssey Marine Exploration, based in Tampa, Florida, discovered the ship three miles down under the North Atlantic. According to United Press International on July 23, 2013, the salvage effort has recovered 99 percent of the silver reported to be on the ship when it sunk.
"Odyssey located the ship in September 2011 on a salvage contract with the United Kingdom Department for Transport, and will get to keep 80 percent of the value under the agreement."
The 61 tons of silver is valued at $210 million dollars. Odyssey will get to keep $168 million of the silver. 1,218 ingots were salvaged in 2012 and another 1,574 this year, increasing the total from 48 tons to 109, which is almost 3.2 million troy ounces of silver.
61 tons of silver recovered is an all-time record for both dollar value and depth at which it was recovered. The 412-foot ship was sunk in 1941 by torpedoes fired by a German U-boat. Odyssey Marine Exploration specialized in salvaging deep-water shipwrecks in particular. The company is publicly traded and currently has a number of simultaneous projects underway worldwide.
