On a side note no wonder Spain is broke. They spend money on high speed rail that has NEVER made money, and apparently it just kills people.

Media reports say the train may have been travelling at more than twice the speed limit around a curve.
Looks that way from the video.

Trains are not safe, they must all go back to petroleum fueled vehicles. The main freeway I-75 in Michigan used to be train tracks before the tracks were destroyed for petroleum vehicles.

Excessive speed has been identified as the likely main cause of the accident, official sources told Reuters as hospitals treated some of more than 170 people who were injured, including at least five Americans.
wow! ya think?

I see fat chicks in Wal-Mart have this problem also,
when they make a sharp 90^ turn down an isle the caboose keeps going the opposite direction.

Traveling too fast? Is that the official reason?
What about the explosion both heard and seen BEFORE the crash?

I saw the flash. I presumed it was some type of arcing or shorting to the electrical wire (maybe caused by misalignement as the train started tilting?), but maybe it is something else.

the train was already off the track when the flash occurred, I doubt it was the "cause" of the derailment.
more likely it was an effect of the train coming off the track, just like the people that died

One of the drivers was trapped in his cabin and told the railway station by radio that the train entered the bend at 190 kilometres per hour (120 mph), reported newspaper El Pais.
The speed limit on that section of track is 80km/h (50mph).
'We're only human! We're only human!' he told the station, the newspaper said, citing sources close to the investigation. 'I hope there are no dead, because this will fall on my conscience.'
Police have put an unnamed train driver under formal investigation - the Galicia government said one driver was in hospital.

to my untrained eye, looks like the train was traveling way to fast for track conditions, seems like the engine guided through the turn but the cars were going to fast to negotiate, looks like the cars just uncoupled

True but they've never made a dime and in actuality ended up being a massive money pit.
