“Hornady Suspends Production of 150 Ammo Types and 150 Bullet Types for Balance of 2013″

In order to increase deliveries of its most popular types of ammunition and bullets, Hornady announced that it will temporarily suspend production of 150 bullet types and 150 ammo types. IMPORTANT: These bullet and ammo products are NOT being discontinued. Rather, these less-popular, suspended items will simply not be produced for the remainder of 2013. By doing this, Hornady can reduce tool/machinery changes and thereby increase production of products in highest demand. On July 2nd, Hornady issued this statement:

Dear Hornady Customer:

As you are aware, 2013 has been one of the most challenging years ever in the sporting arms industry. We are proud of the increases in production we have achieved this year, but we are still faced witha demand that exceeds our ability to produce.

In efforts to increase production, we have reviewed everything, refining procedures, adding people, and equipment when possible. One area that will help us produce more: cutting the number of changeovers in our production machinery.

In order to reduce changeovers, we are announceing the temporary suspension of over 150 ammunition items and 150 bullet items, for the balance of 2013.

Attached you will find the list of items that will be suspended. Our plan is to remove the orders for these items from our system, beginning July 10th, and notify you of the cancellations. We will continue to monitor and update this list as the market conditions change.

Our goal is to try to deliver more to every customer, and while this may impact certain categories, our overall delivery should improve.”

Hornady is expensive as shit. What they produce is used a lot in competitions. Maybe people can't afford to compete anymore. Dunno.

I get the impression Hornady is concentrating on 5.56/.223 projectiles.

Their critical defense line is pretty nice.

Those will primarily maim instead of kill which is useful in war...

The extent of damage is totally dependent upon the design of the projectile, regardless of caliber.

So larger caliber doesn't damage more then?

FMJ's are military bullets. Maim/injure so as to elicit help from your buddies (thus removing from the fight) to extract/recover/protect you. Hollow points/lead are LEO rounds. Don't go through the target to nail some innocent behind them. They make way more mess though to said target. Large "calibers" in either type, will make a mess of you regardless. Btw, if they want to concentrate on .223/5.56 to get up to speed, I'm all for it. Scrap the specialty rounds........

It does. A more important thing to look at is the bullet's action after impact. I believe the 5.45x39 is probably one of the deadliest.... it yaws quite a bit after impact.

I'm not for it, a lot of specialty rounds are what your average American relies on. I shoot Hornady for my marlin guide gun, even though it kicks like a mule because of the velocity. It's a good round, it would suck if I couldn't get it anymore. Thankfully, I've got a few rounds stockpiled now.

Also, I see no mention of this on Hornady's website. Makes me question the validity of this story.

Who's to say because the 308 has a higher velocity. Can you shoot the 5.45x39 in an AK47?

Not in an AK-47 but in the AK-74.

Naturally the more energy imparted on the target results in more damage. Specialty rounds are designed to dump as much energy as possible into the target rather than punching a hole through, e.g. a 9mm ball round (FMJ or TMJ)isn't much of a manstopper due to overpenetration yet a 9mm in a specialty round is another matter entirely.

No

You're thinking about the AK74, basically another military .22 centerfire round.

I am really starting to get annoyed with these news sites that give you a paragraph and then "click here to read more" which takes you to some other stupid site that says "click here to read more". How many fucking ads do I have to load to read this crap? /rant off

I pity the man who shoots the GAP round.

I scanned the list of continued production stuff and it seemed to me to be they are continuing production of the most popular hunting, practice, competition and defensive bullets and loaded ammo and discontinuing some of the odd-man-out stuff that tended to sit on store shelves waiting for the odd man to come and buy them.

In the shooting business, once you lose a customer to another manufacturer you have lost them. They are trying to keep as many of their customers as possible. Berger, for example, purges their bullet line frequently, and probably in order to keep up with production to meet demand for their in-demand stuff.
