I wonder what they would do if they really had something to riot about?

A wave of violence swept through Huntington Beach, Calif., on Sunday night at the conclusion of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing.
Waves weren’t the only things crashing at Sunday night’s Vans U.S. Open of Surfing.

A riot broke out in downtown Huntington Beach, Calif. at the conclusion of Sunday nights surfing contest, with an unruly crowd brawling in the streets, smashing store windows and looting, police said.

While it is unclear what precipitated the violence, witnesses reported fights breaking out shortly after 7 p.m. as the large crowd headed from the beach back across the Pacific Coast Highway, and more than a dozen portable toilets were overturned.

The rioters pulled a stop sign out of the ground, threw it through the window of a bicycle shop and made off with one of the cruisers, NBC-4 reported

Some of the rioters used a stop sign to break the window of a bicycle shop. "We were all huddled inside the building and we had the lights off because all the people were up here mobbing around, and I was inside and I saw them tearing down the stop sign," Etheredge, an employee at the bike shop, told NBC. "As soon as that stop sign came down, I knew that stop sign was coming through the window. And sure enough, two seconds later, it did."

Police in riot gear moved in and a tense standoff with the crowd ensued.

"I heard shots going off, and the whole crowd just started running," witness Russ Mundi told the L.A. Times.

Eight people were arrested for failing to disperse, and property damage estimates are still being tallied.

In addition to the surfing contest, the Vans event also included skateboarding and BMX biking exhibitions.

that was one of the wimpiest riots ever.

they had an article about it at Surfline.com.

then the article was censored.

since the riot occurred after the Van's surf contest, i was thinking maybe Van's put pressure on Surfline to kill the article.

now i'm wondering if they pulled the article because it makes them look like wimps who don't know how to riot.

and the police in their riot gear ? it's some teenage wannabe hoodlum kicking over a porta-potty. for THAT they have bullet-proof vests ?!

I don't think surfers are acknowledged for being the best rioters.

Just my guess. I would think they would rather catch the next wave and call it good.

I don't think that's a flaw. Being a good rioter is not on anyone's resume anyway. Leave the riots to the inner cities, imo.

Usually when they do though, bullets fly. Whites don't do it half assed. lol

actually, these were just Huntington Beach locals. it was in the early PM.

by that point anybody who surfed that day would have been long gone.

it's true, after a good surf, you're too relaxed to riot.

however, no offense to StackerKen since i think he used to go to Huntington ... the waves are not the best. sort of like a West Coast Florida. they get island shadowing of West swells and Point Concepcion cutting off Northwest swells.

Good point, but depends upon how you look at it. Being a beginner and learning to surf, Huntington sounds perfect to me. Where I'm at, I'm walking distance to some great surfing, but usually I can't paddle out because it is an advanced spot. Lot's of big rips, big pounding surf, and sharky too. I don't know if sharks like to chomp on beginners or advanced surfers. Hopefully they prefer eating advanced surfers. :)

I seen this story the day after it happened, but thought it was pretty lame.

Which came first the police in "riot gear" or the "riot" ?

Surfers rioting? Must have run out of pot to smoke.

it's about $6000 for the helicopter ride from the coast to the nearest ER. and that was in 2005.

several great white sightings have made an impression on me. the helicopter price tag comes from an incident near Salmon Creek, a woman surfer who felt the shark vibe and made a bee-line for the shore. and that is when she was attacked.

i don't remember many shark attack incidents that involved beginners. but beginners aren't usually 1/4 mile from shore in 40 feet of water, where the sharks are regularly cruising.

yes, Huntington is a good place for beginners. i hear it's territorial in some places, i think just South of the Pier.

perchance, is this perception related to the watching of Fast Times at Ridgmont High ?

paddle out at Del Mar, and you're just as likely to meet a lawyer or a doctor as a rasta-man.

but, since California has their medical marijuana laws, there could be a marketing opportunity there.

If found this interview. It was an 18 foot shark, and she ended up on the back of the beast. Surfer mag gave her a new board and wetsuit, which was a nice thing to do.

I've heard Salmon creek is sharky. Also, Tunitas Creek....aka, "don't eat us" creek. Of course, I've been paddling out in the red triangle too, but I think I'll stay away from any Creek spots.
