The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday 21 U.S. embassies across the Middle East and North Africa were closed as a direct result of increased “chatter” among terrorist organizations that is “very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11.”
Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., said on NBC (http://washingtonexaminer.com/section/NBC)’s “Meet the Press” that discussions between terrorist groups intercepted by U.S. intelligence pose the “most serious threat I’ve seen in a number of years.”
The State Department (http://washingtonexaminer.com/section/State-Department) issued a worldwide travel alert Friday warning Americans abroad that there is a significant threat of a terrorist attack through the end of the month. North Africa and the Middle East are especially on watch, and embassies in those regions have been closed down. Both steps are rarely used measures that suggest the White House and the intelligence community see threats as credible.

Chambliss said the intelligence gathered that led to the closures was the direct result of a controversial National Security Agency program that allows the U.S. to listen in on phone calls, read emails and gather other electronic evidence from virtually anyone.
“They are what lead us or allow us to have the ability to gather this chatter that I referred to,” Chambliss said. “These programs, even though they’re controversial, this is the reason they’re so important.”
A number of congressmen on both sides of the aisle and either end of the Capitol have backed efforts to would curb the NSA’s ability to listen in.
Chambliss and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., spent more than 90 minutes with President Obama discussing the program, Durbin said, and were briefed by Vice President Joe Biden last week on the most recent intelligence leading them to believe a terrorist attack could be imminent.
Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, also said he was open to reforming the NSA program to protect the privacy of American citizens, but stressed that it is also a critical tool in fighting terrorism.
“We need to know and realize we are living in an increasingly dangerous world,” Durbin said.

The evil things we do totally justifies all the evil things we do, therefore we must keep doing evil.
The money shot:
“We need to know and realize we are living in an increasingly dangerous world,” Durbin said.
And...how did we get here??

Well of course this new information comes courtesy of the NSA's domestic spying program, is anyone surprised that they're claiming this?? I think this answers your question from a previous thread, something along the lines of why are they telling us this? The answer is, so that when nothing happens, they can proclaim victory thanks to warrantless, nationwide surveillance of all Americans.

Think about it, how well it all comes together for them. "The most serious threat I've seen in years", closing embassies all over the world, elevating the terror threat tables, elevating it to the top of mainstream news discussion, all so that when nothing happens, it's all thanks to the NSA.

Al-Qaida chief's message led to embassy closures
Aug 5, 6:41 PM (ET)
By LARA JAKES and KIMBERLY DOZIER
WASHINGTON (AP) - An intercepted secret message between al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri and his deputy in Yemen about plans for a major terror attack was the trigger that set off the current shutdown of many U.S. embassies, two officials told The Associated Press on Monday.
A U.S. intelligence official and a Mideast diplomat said al-Zawahri's message was picked up several weeks ago and appeared to initially target Yemeni interests. The threat was expanded to include American or other Western sites abroad, officials said, indicating the target could be a single embassy, a number of posts or some other site. Lawmakers have said it was a massive plot in the final stages, but they have offered no specifics.
The intelligence official said the message was sent to Nasser al-Wahishi, the head of the terror network's organization, based in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the sensitive issue publicly.
American spies and intelligence analysts on Monday scoured email, phone calls and radio communications between al-Qaida operatives in Yemen and the organization's senior leaders to determine the timing and targets of the planned attack.
The call from al-Zawahri, who took over for Osama bin Laden after U.S. Navy SEALs killed the al-Qaida leader in May 2011, led the Obama administration to close diplomatic posts from Mauritania on Africa's west coast through the Middle East to Bangladesh, east of India, and as far south as Madagascar.
The U.S. did decide to reopen some posts on Monday, including well-defended embassies in Kabul, Afghanistan, and Baghdad. Authorities in Yemen, meanwhile, released the names of 25 wanted al-Qaida suspects and said those people had been planning terrorist attacks targeting "foreign offices and organizations and Yemeni installations" in the capital Sanaa and other cities across the country.
The Yemeni government also went on high alert Monday, stepping up security at government facilities and checkpoints.
Officials in the U.S. wouldn't say who intercepted the initial suspect communications - the CIA, the National Security Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency or one of the other intelligence agencies - that kicked off the sweeping pre-emptive closure of U.S. facilities. But an intelligence official said the controversial NSA programs that gather data on American phone calls or track Internet communications with suspected terrorists played no part in detecting the initial tip. That official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the spying publicly.

Astute observation. With all the bad press about the NSA, they definitely need to "win one for the team." However, by installing fear from this mostly likely controlled outcome and false information, it really makes them the terrorists if you think about it.

He means that this is all bull shit. The official narrative pre=9/11 was that no one saw that coming. Now, they say we did see it coming, which means we didn't do dick about it at the time.
Just more bullshit spin.

Yes, you got my point - either "9/11 was a completely unknown, unknown" or "well we knew about it, somewhat" - which is it? Answer: whichever it is convenient to argue as a support for whatever agenda is being pushed at the moment.
