OK, now this is seriously cool as shit.

you can download an industrial strength 3D program named "Blender" at
http://www.blender.org/

it will output a variety of formats, including the *.stl (stereolithography) format that is usually used for stereolithography/ 3D printing. however, that is a 25 year old format, it is logical for the printers to accept other formats and/or to have their own native file format.

Blender is not a toy, it's a serious tool, in the same league as Max or Maya, or the 3D engineering programs.

anyway, you can generate your own 3D files and get something printed for $100 ish. might even find someone on Craigslist with one of these machines who would do it for an ounce of Silver.

Does anyone besides me on this forum do Blender? I work in it daily for a living. I really want to get into 3D printing sometime but I'm so busy with my current business. I design everything from body parts, clothing, furniture, and so on.

That is cool, and it's only in it's infancy. Not a good time to become a machinist...

I've been looking through some of the docs -- it looks complicated

Hmmm. I'd like to see the design of the missing lock ring on that acetabular cup. Looks like a complete knockoff of my patent. On the other hand, if the porous coating can be built in instead of applied after the machining process, that's huge.

i work in it about once a month.

more often i use Solidworks or 3D Max.

however, i want to divorce Max, Autodesk, and Microsoft, so learning Blender on Linux is the way to go, as a training project.
