In 2009 to commemorate the Colorado Gold Rush 1 oz gold coins were made for the sesquicentennial of Clark and Gruber Mint as well as the Gold rush of 1859 in Coloardo. Out of Colorado gold that was refined to 999 pure.

For this project they wanted to stick to the original form true to the gold rush as the same thing that was done 150 years ago is going on today.

When the gold rush started there was plenty of gold but it was inconsistent in size and purity from location to location. A private firm opened up to mint the native or raw gold into standard weight and measure to avoid the confusion and did melts and assays per batch and the coins made contained more values in metal than the Standard US Mint Coins of the day, This currency dominated Early Colorado and much was exported to pay for supplies that built the state.
As with anything in Economics such coins could be melted down for more than the face value and as such very few examples survive to this day. A $10 gold coin may have contained $10.07 cents of metal, So anyone melting them would make a profit back when pennies counted.

With the renewed high price in gold old mines have reopened and private minting has been renewed in Colorado with Both Firms of Daniel Carr and his Denver mint Coin press and die work as well as Prospectors Gold and Gems Refining division by David Emslie have worked together since 2008 to bring about more the same. Making gold into units of standard weight and measure for trade, investing and collecting. Mainly making ingots and bars and one tenth oz gold coins for local use and investment.

To pay homage to those coins made 152 years ago Carr and Emslie have come together again to do this. a $5 gold piece made from the same alloy placer gold that was used in that time from a location that mined in that era. We have used an XRF gun in order to determine the alloy of many Clark and Gruber Original coins and the alloy varies from 77 to 91% gold. Most have been in the low 80s such as the gold from this mine.

The alloy of these gold pieces are 82.5 fine gold and the balance silver and other metals. They all vary slightly as some are a little more and some are a little less than a $5 gold piece of the day. With a gold content from .2345 to .2504. Although this special Restrike is hardly bullion as production will be based only on Demand but is also limited to this small placer mines output of gold of about 5 to 10 oz per week during the summer months.

This is not a lot of gold for such a project but we felt a special Colorado coin was needed.

Other fun facts about this little min that just began production in 2011 is the gold is refined by Prospectors Gold and Gems. Much of this fresh and responsibly mined gold is used for new wedding bands for people getting married.
Even more interesting is the traces of silver in the alloy have been saved. The majority of that silver was recently used for a special request that we just had to say yes too. The New pope's Silver Chalice that was made by an Argentinian silver smith also included some Colorado silver that came from this mine and this gold alloy. As for an american pope some silver from Both North and South America was contributed. As we were the only firm in the sate with Actual Colorado Silver we answered the call.

Based on production the mintage of this gold piece will be less than 100.

You are bidding on one of the first 36 made as a first run batch test batch for the second half of July production 2013.

Currently we will be displaying the Collection at the Chicago ANA coin show this week. Aug 13 to the 18th we are listing just a few in case anyone online wants them, if you bid we will hold one for you. There is a chance they could all sell out very fast as Dan Carr has a large following and there are many territorial mint collectors. We are setting the price as $450 per coin for these first strike gold pieces. There wont be discounts. And if they dont sell we wont make more and the mintage will be just 36
