North Carolina: voter ID becomes law
Republican governor signs bill that requires photo evidence at polling booths, which critics say targets Democrat supporters
Associated Press in Charlotte
theguardian.com, Monday 12 August 2013 22.19 EDT

North Carolina's governor has quietly signed a measure into law that overhauls the state's election laws to require government-issued photo IDs at the polls and shorten early voting, moves that drew stinging criticism and threats of legal action from a leading civil rights organisation and other groups.

The American Civil Liberties Union joined two other groups in announcing they were filing a lawsuit against key parts of the package, hours after Republican Governor Pat McCrory issued a statement that he had signed it without a ceremony and without journalists present.

Republicans lawmakers who backed the measure said it was meant to prevent voter fraud, which they allege is both rampant and undetected in North Carolina. Independent voting rights groups joined Democrats and libertarians in suggesting the true goal was to suppress voter turnout, especially among traditional Democratic constituencies such as black people, the young, the elderly and the poor.

"It is a trampling on the blood, sweat and tears of the martyrs black and white who fought for voting rights in this country," said the Reverend William Barber, president of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, a leading civil rights group. "It puts McCrory on the wrong side of history."

North Carolina, a state with a past history of centrist politics, has drawn national attention since the Republican-led legislature that took power in 2010 pushed through the election law changes in the final days of the 2013 session.

On Monday the former secretary of state Hillary Clinton said the North Carolina election law amounted to "the greatest hits of voter suppression". She addressed voting rights during a speech to a meeting of a national lawyers' group, the American Bar Association, in San Francisco.

Passage of the North Carolina measure followed the US supreme court's 5-4 decision in June to effectively halt the enforcement provisions of the landmark Voting Rights Act, enacted to outlaw racial discrimination against voters. North Carolina was among the states, mostly in the south, that were subjected to special federal enforcement, with requirements to get approval in advance before they could make even minor changes to voting laws.

That high court ruling cleared the way for North Carolina's new Republican leadership to enact voting law changes without prior federal approval.

Barber called the Republican-backed measure one of the worst attempts in the nation at voting reform and said the NAACP considered the package an all-out attack on existing laws long seen as a model of voter participation.

The package would take effect in 2016. It requires voters to present government-issued photo IDs at the polls and shortens early voting by a week, from 17 days to 10. It also ends same-day registration and a high school civics program that registers tens of thousands of students to vote each year in advance of their 18th birthday.

Critics said disclosure requirements intended to make clear who is underwriting campaign ads also would be weakened and noted that political parties would be enabled to take in unlimited corporate donations. The cap on individual campaign donations also would rise from $4,000 to $5,000.

Other states with Republican-controlled legislatures have enacted similar voter identification requirements. Supporters say the measures are intended to restrict voter fraud. Opponents say they are calculated to suppress turnout by reliable Democratic constituencies who are less likely to have government-issued photo IDs.

McCrory, who announced the signing in a statement, appeared in a 95-second message on YouTube giving his reasons and focusing solely on the voter identification component. The first-term governor cited laws that require people to present photo IDs to board airplanes, cash a cheque or apply for government benefits. "Our right to vote deserves similar protection," McCrory said in the video.

He accused opponents of the measure of "using scare tactics" and engaging "in divisive politics".

The Democratic attorney general Roy Cooper was among those who had urged a veto. "This bill was much more than just voter ID," Cooper said. "There were dozens of reasons to veto this bad elections bill with its restrictions on voting, more corporate campaign money and reduced public disclosure being just a few."

The US attorney general, Eric Holder, had said in July that the US justice department would challenge a new voter identification law in Texas and suggested it was closely watching developments in North Carolina and other states.

Russia Confirms It Will Enforce Anti-Gay Laws at Olympics
by Bridget Johnson
August 12, 2013 - 10:02 am

Russia confirmed that it will be enforcing its new anti-gay laws during the Sochi Winter Olympics, brushing off claims from the International Olympic Committee that athletes and guests would be protected from the legislation.

The legislation bans undefined “propaganda” that supports non-traditional relationships, expressed either in person on or the web. The first foreigners to be fined under the law, which President Vladimir Putin signed in July, were four Dutch filmmakers shooting a documentary about the state of gay rights in one Russian town.

At a Friday press conference, President Obama said he was more offended by the law than anybody.

“I know that one question that’s been raised is how do we approach the Olympics. I want to just make very clear right now I do not think it’s appropriate to boycott the Olympics. We’ve got a bunch of Americans out there who are training hard, who are doing everything they can to succeed. Nobody is more offended than me by some of the anti-gay and lesbian legislation that you’ve been seeing in Russia. But as I said just this week, I’ve spoken out against that not just with respect to Russia but a number of other countries where we continue to do work with them, but we have a strong disagreement on this issue,” Obama said.

“And one of the things I’m really looking forward to is maybe some gay and lesbian athletes bringing home the gold or silver or bronze, which I think would go a long way in rejecting the kind of attitudes that we’re seeing there. And if Russia doesn’t have gay or lesbian athletes, then it probably makes their team weaker,” he added.

Russia’s Interior Ministry said in a statement today that there will be no exceptions to the law for visiting Olympians.

“The law enforcement agencies can have no qualms with people who harbor a nontraditional sexual orientation and do not commit such acts, do not conduct any kind of provocation and take part in the Olympics peacefully,” said the statement, according to RIA Novosti.

“Any discussion on violating the rights of representatives of nontraditional sexual orientations, stopping them from taking part in the Olympic Games or discrimination of athletes and guests of the Olympics according to their sexual orientation is totally unfounded and contrived,” the ministry added.

Last week, a group of 87 House Democrats and one Republican — former Foreign Affairs Committee chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) — implored Secretary of State John Kerry to take measures to protect gay athletes and fans at the Olympics.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, said the U.S. “must do everything we can to protect those Americans who are traveling to Russia for the Olympic and Paralympic Games this winter” in the wake of recent laws passed in Russia.

“Russia’s anti-LGBT laws defy basic human rights that should be guaranteed to everyone at all times and in all places,” said Nadler. “These laws are completely contrary to the uniting spirit of the Olympics, which brings diverse nations together in a spirit of peaceful and friendly competition.”

Boo hoo, communist can go fuck themselves. The Supreme Court has already ruled on Voter ID laws and ruled them Constitutional.

Crawford v. Marion County Election Board, 553 U.S. 181 (2008), is a United States Supreme Court case holding that an Indiana law requiring voters to provide photo IDs did not violate the Constitution of the United States.

Good job North Carolina. Also the only state in the union that outright bans the practice of civil forfeitures.

NC ain't looking too bad.
That's actually a pretty big deal with more pigs policing for profit to pad their budgets then ever before.

NC is also trying to pass a bill a that would ban the consideration of "foreign laws," including Sharia, in the state's court system in certain cases.

PS. Ares, I know you hate the traffic in the Charlotte area, maybe you've not found the right property, or area to live yet?

You can own a pretty big spread in this state for the money. I had a hard time finding a great home where I'm at, fighting multiple offers and low inventory of good homes.
I got lucky and grabbed one before it hit the multiple listings.

The real estate market is heating up in your area now too.
Hope your job is going well!

Yeah traffic is still a problem. That and I've noticed people cannot drive here. Changing lanes without turn signals, or just turning without turn signals. Pulling out in front of someone 100ft away while they are doing 45-50mph, not sure how many vehicle fires I've seen on the 485 in the short time I've been here. I've also seen 3 vehicles turned over, 2 on the 485 and 1 on I-77. 2 of the turned over vehicles there wasn't even another car involved.. Really? You can't even keep the vehicle upright??? On top of that the state has inspections that need to be performed yearly to renew plates.. What a racket, and obviously isn't working when the population can't drive worth a shit. I thought Michigan was bad with their no fault clause in vehicle collisions. They drove like assholes, because hey if it's more than 500 FRN's worth of damage not my fault.. :-/ And their driving style reflected it.

But outside of the ranting of horrible drivers, yeah I'm renting a home now in the Belmont area. Have about 11 months left on the lease before I can start looking for a home to buy or build. Haven't decided yet. Although I do know it will not be in Mecklenberg county, just for the taxes alone. I moved out of a tax heavy county in Indiana. Not going to make that mistake again. :)

Job isn't going too bad. I'm consolidating a lot of their old legacy systems and upgrading them to new methods for logging in. Just need to work on upgrading the domain level so that I can do more. :)

I think you are still getting used to a new place.
Look around, you'll find what you like. Stay out of the city limits and away from HOA's.
My property tax rate is .83, which isn't too bad in the county. Some parts of the county are lower.
Yeah, the inspections are a drag and many states assess your vehicle by value for taxes...nothing new to me. California and AZ did too.
NC is still much better then Butthole, IN

I travel in an older vehicle (2005), so hopefully that isn't too much for plate cost. I haven't even gone to get my drivers license yet... lol I'll do that sometime when I have a chance. But as far as voting, I'm pretty sure I'm done doing that. Even more evidence I can add to my lawful money demand that I am not a party to this illusion.

2005 vehicle won't be much. I hope your drivers license experience is better then mine. It was like going back in time before technology with long waits. You're supposed to get it in 60 days, but I don't think there's any hurry.
No vehicle inspection first year.
Here's the website: http://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/moving/
You can read the handbook online or download it. Make sure you know what a school sign and no passing sign look like with no writing on them. There's 4 signs and you can only miss 2
I missed those 2 (drew a blank) and only 1 of the 25 questions.
