I found one mention of this back about 3 years. Wonder if anyone here has used or knows anything about it. Security issues and so on?
ok so viber seems to compete with whatsapp. I haven't used that either but know people who do. Thoughts on either?

Works as a good text service for me, voice is broken up like a walkie talkie.
I'm in slow boat C.R. ville though.

yeah most of my voice chat is going into asia so it is not the best quality. Being a radio operator you train your ears to pick stuff out of the airwaves mud.
While skype is pretty cheap to call mobiles or LL's, I would like something that doesn't disconnect you on key words. I find just about every call gets chopped within a second if some kinds of things are said. Initially I thought just crappy internet but after a couple years its pretty obvious you can't talk about somethings on skype.

ok this could be s short lived thread. Sounds like it has some good features. I wouldn't like the linking of the app to the cellphone number and sucking up my contacts. Also no support for a tablet due to lack of cell phone capability.

I know someone here is running their own chat server. I like that idea and might pursue that instead.

I use Viber to communicate with my girlfriend in Bogotá Colombia. It is crystal clear. I doubt that it is secure since It is voice and text over the internet. We also use skype but the sound quality of Viber is better, at least to my deaf ears.

virtually every one of my truth radio podcast repertoire (http://gold-silver.us/forum/showthread.php?60988-great-truth-radio-podcast-blog-no-commercials!) uses skype-to-skype, or skype-to-LL/mobile phone. The regular hosts' tales of the connection dropping, or breaking up to inaudibility, when they get to something particularly sensitive-- are legion!
I guess with skype it's quite easy to save a high quality audio recording of the conversation, and cheap/free for radio hosts & guests, so it's the medium of choice for web-based podcasters. But just imagining some joo-controlled alphabet agency goon monitoring every call real-time, and "stopping" the convo' in some form when it goes somewhere contrary to their JWO (http://zioncrimefactory.com/jew-world-order/) interests... their paranoid control freakishness is mind-boggling!:o

yes I communicate with someone and there are things going on or have gone on behind the scenes, not the scenes of skype, I mean things going on that are echos of previous business dealings. I'm confident that along with that history and some projects that are on the cards, there is some monitoring going on. We have been chatting and you can sometimes hear the other party that is listening. Its kind of like when your phone is being tapped, a click click and some noises that sounds like another mic, VOX or something.
Then we have period were a specific topic of discussion about someone (from the history) causes immediate drop outs. We can come back on line, pick it up where we left off and bang the lines dead. This will keep happening and then skype just goes dark for us and we are back on the traditional phone line.

Thanks for the recommendation. :)
I do believe that the server does support voice chatting (Not sure I'll have to dive into it more and see). But for secure instant messaging absolutely secure. SSL/TLS connection to the server, and logging disabled. My brothers and I use it when discussing certain topics. So even if the server were to be confiscated, no big deal. No logs to be had.

yes, was chatting last night and the convo was going really well. Fairly clear audio and no drop outs for maybe half an hour or so, then I dropped the key word and bamm, line went dead may <5 seconds later.

Checked my xmpp server, it does support voice chat, video not sure guess it would depend on the chat client. I user gibberbot, which doesn't have option for voice chatting, but there are other chat clients out there that do.

Wife was using Viber the other night, clear in the states but a lot of echo to the Phil, so bad she couldn't even catch keywords. They all suck to the Phil, except certain phone cards but that gets pricey real quick.
