Planned Obsolescence is the deliberate shortening of product life spans to guarantee consumer demand. As a magazine for advertisers succinctly puts it: The article that refuses to wear out is a tragedy of business – and a tragedy for the modern growth society which relies on an ever-accelerating cycle of production, consumption and throwing away.

The Light Bulb Conspiracy combines investigative research and rare archive footage to trace the untold story of Planned Obsolescence, from its beginnings in the 1920s with a secret cartel, set up expressly to limit the life span of light bulbs, to present-day stories involving cutting edge electronics (such as the iPod) and the growing spirit of resistance amongst ordinary consumers.

This film travels to France, Germany, Spain and the US to find witnesses of a business practice which has become the basis of the modern economy, and brings back disquieting pictures from Africa where discarded electronics are piling up in huge cemeteries for electronic waste.

Storyline

Once upon a time..... products were made to last. Then, at the beginning of the 1920s, a group of businessmen were struck by the following insight: 'A product that refuses to wear out is a tragedy of business' (1928). Thus Planned Obsolescence was born. Shortly after, the first worldwide cartel was set up expressly to reduce the life span of the incandescent light bulb, a symbol for innovation and bright new ideas, and the first official victim of Planned Obsolescence. During the 1950s, with the birth of the consumer society, the concept took on a whole new meaning, as explained by flamboyant designer Brooks Stevens: 'Planned Obsolescence, the desire to own something a little newer, a little better, a little sooner than is necessary...'. The growth society flourished, everybody had everything, the waste was piling up (preferably far away in illegal dumps in the Third World) - until consumers started rebelling... Can the modern growth society survive without Planned Obsolescence? Did ... For years we replaced bulbs every couple months in the chandelier. That all changed when we put in rough service bulbs. Turns out that the 80 or so trains running daily on the C&NW tracks a mile away would cause a vibration that would take out normal bulbs. The same vibration would shake nails out of wood siding.

The situation is much better now that they have gone to those mile long continuous track on the railroad.

i use bulbs from this web site which are LED ,last a long time and are very efficient .

i spent a lot of time and money investigating LED lighting and in the end it was very simple because all you have to do is take out the old bulb and put in a new one.

Everything is built with planned obsolescence. Buildings with Mortar between blocks, asphalt roads, cars, water heaters, batteries, etc.

I've recently started changing out lighting with led's, the light seems just as warm as normal light bulbs and will out-live me before needing to be changed.

All the solid state hardware is currently produced for free virtually...Most of the prices you pay is mark up to sustain employment.

You all just think you are important...They just have no way to get rid of you all.

The entire global banking system can be reduced down to a small program...You could do all global banking from a smart device hooked up to the cloud.

The technology exists to remove you all from the equation now.

from 2001 to 2008...was just momentum...or the wave cresting...since then it has been slowly heading down.

I am a bit skeptical of LED and florescent lighting. I have seen some of both types of bulbs have an obvious flicker which is probably the 50-60 hertz that is in the power line. This flicker can't be good for the body though. Although some bulbs don't noticeably flicker I wonder if there is still an imperceptible flicker that could still affect the body?

The government trying to legislate florescent bulbs makes me even more wary of the technology. Anytime they try and force something on you like fluoride or vaccines or know it can't be good.

Keyword 'old'

My kid can't find any video drivers for 7 either, older motherboard and old video card. He has been tempted to downgrade to XP.

Right, if we had a lightbulb that lasted forever, what would we do when one blows?

Did they ever used to guarantee T.V.s for more than a year?

I know they used to include a fuse or two onboard that you could replace yourself without scrapping the entire set.
