KUSA - Weld County Commissioners voted unanimously to put the 51st state initiative on the upcoming voter ballot during a board meeting Monday morning.

The proposed language on the ballot will ask "Shall the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, in concert with the county commissioners of other Colorado counties, pursue becoming the 51st state of the United States of America?"

More than 85 percent of residents believe 51st state initiative should be on ballot, Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway said during the session.
Conway in a previous meeting said the state would be called North Colorado.

Counties including Cheyenne, Sedgwick and Yuma have already put initiative on ballot and there are more to come, according to Conway.
Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer says commissioners individually have been criticized since this proposal was made public but they believe they are doing what the people want across Weld County.

Kirkmeyer says commissioners were given lots of pressure from constituents to repeal laws. She says Weld County residents feel a huge disconnect with Denver.

The voting session Monday included commissioners quoting the likes of Gandhi to Barak Obama.
"Yes we can," Commissioner Bill Garcia said at the meeting.

Counties will vote on the initiative in November.
The last state to do this effectively was West Virginia in 1863.

Collectively, how many fighter jets, ground attack jets, attack helicopters, flying killer robots, etc. do those NoCo counties have??

If they secede from Colorado, why would they want to be a separate state of the United States? Why not an independent country? Isn't this an exercise in choosing the body politic you want to be? Or belong to? I don't understand how rejecting Colorado isn't the same as rejecting the Federal government. If these people are happy with the federal government they are not going to be solving any of their problems by simply becoming another state. Or is it as MR says--they think the federal government will allow a reorganization, but not a complete withdrawal from their 'jurisdiction'.

IMO they should form their own government per the DoI totally independent from Uncle Satan, Inc.

Don't they have to get permission of the state legislature to secede from the state?

Texas tried something like that, then were placed on a no fly list like Libya. They changed their minds I guess.

Dunno, but wouldn't doubt it at all - EVERYTHING is situated by the legislatures to prevent the peasants from wandering off the reservation.

You establish a capital city and then attach territory to it. That is the way the system has always worked.

Permission? PERMISSION? PERMISSION? To secede? They don't need no stinking permission. From anybody. They might need guns and an iron will. The whole reason for declaring independence is becaus you are being oppressed. Oppressors aren't likely to give the oppressed permission to do anything, so why bother to ask? Just do it. And when you succeed, don't apologize. And for god's sake don't borrow money from your former oppressors or any of their supporters.
