KUSA - Weld County Commissioners voted unanimously to put the 51st state initiative on the upcoming voter ballot during a board meeting Monday morning.
The proposed language on the ballot will ask "Shall the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County, in concert with the county commissioners of other Colorado counties, pursue becoming the 51st state of the United States of America?"
More than 85 percent of residents believe 51st state initiative should be on ballot, Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway said during the session.
Conway in a previous meeting said the state would be called North Colorado.
Counties including Cheyenne, Sedgwick and Yuma have already put initiative on ballot and there are more to come, according to Conway.
Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer says commissioners individually have been criticized since this proposal was made public but they believe they are doing what the people want across Weld County.
Kirkmeyer says commissioners were given lots of pressure from constituents to repeal laws. She says Weld County residents feel a huge disconnect with Denver.
The voting session Monday included commissioners quoting the likes of Gandhi to Barak Obama.
"Yes we can," Commissioner Bill Garcia said at the meeting.
Counties will vote on the initiative in November.
The last state to do this effectively was West Virginia in 1863.
