Hungry ghosts descend on Chinese homes
The gates of hell have opened. Its ghosts have been let loose to roam on earth and visit the homes of their relatives.
According to traditional Chinese beliefs this happens every year during the seventh month of the lunar year, resulting in a raucous, feast-and-music filled celebration known as the Hungry Ghost Festival. But not all ghosts are good. There are some spirits who wander the streets, ravenous and envious because they died without descendants or were ignored by their kin while alive.
To appease the hungry spirits, ethnic Chinese step up prayers, aided by giant colorful joss sticks shaped like dragons. They also burn mock currency and miniature paper television sets, mobile phones and furniture as offering to the ancestors for their use in the other world.
For 15 days, neighborhoods hold nightly shows of shrill Chinese operas and pop concerts to entertain the dead. The shows are accompanied by lavish feasts of grilled pork, broiled chicken, rice and fruit.
People appease the ghosts in the hopes that the spirits will help them with jobs, school exams or even the lottery. On the 15th day of the month - the most auspicious - families offer cooked food to the ghosts.

Here's a gallery of images from this year's Hungry Ghost Festival (http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2013/aug/27/ap-photos-hungry-ghosts-descend-on-chinese-homes/#axzz2dAHLnZxq) by Hong Kong photographer Vincent Yu.

The gallery is hard to navigate and not particularly interesting. The story is main interest IMO.

But they do have teeth and they are getting pissed off at the feeble offerings of fake TVs, fake cell phones and fake silver coins. Go gettem ghosts!

most of the stuff being left for the ghosts is not real anyway, except for the food on the last day. the description of the festival reminded me of chinese funerals. They have a big procession with lots of noise and smoke to drive away the evil spirits come to take away the spirit of the loved one.

they also throw handfuls of money into the air as the procession moves along. Now the money is fake/funny money (what money isn't?) so its not real. The same with the little trinkets they make like the phones, televisions and other devices which are just paper facsimiles.

I was really amazed when I witnessed my first chinese funeral. Especially the money part, being a kid in a stange land I was tempted to believe they were throwing away real money. THis is in a country where they had a 1c note which was worth < 1/50th of a US cent or something silly like that. 1c notes always went to the beggars because you couldn't spend them anyways.

So while ghosts don't have the stomach for real food, they might have the stomach for imaginery paper food.

The real interesting part is how the bvelief systems correlate with the esoteric beliefs. Again another consitency that seems to transcend all the worlds borders and races and also the many millenia that have passed before our time.
