Hey guys, it’s Saturday night and Ponce was scheduled to have been operated on at 9:30 Thursday morning.
I have called several times and no one answers. Either he isn’t picking up the phone or something has happened.

I expect that I will hear from him very soon. After all the years we have communicated, he has always been very reliable. He has people there watching things for him but I don’t have their phone numbers.

Best wishes,

First things first. When he got back home, he probably needed to conduct an inventory of his toilet paper. He should be finished in about a week. Who knows.... it could have been a major difficulty getting that Puerto Rican accent out. Not sure of the extent of the surgery, but it is likely not much fun.

Seriously, what happened ? Anyone hurt other than yourself ?

I had high BP I had 198/108 and now at last reading I am at 100/68. I am pretty far below normal still. I lost 16 pounds and got my weight to my norm for my height. I take vit D3 and Krill oil, and some thyroid vitamins, I am now in the process of reducing my BP meds dosage to half... then if my BP stays normal then I will cut the dose is half again... and then none. If it holds then I will stay off. I monitor my BP 3 times a day. Do you have a BP Monitor? This is the one I use.

Good that you are OK Ponce! Perhaps that you were lucky having the stroke the day before your supposed to have throat surgery. If you'ld had the stroke the day after the surgery you might have been dead now. If the surgery is just to make you sound a bit better, don't do it! It will mess up your blood clotting for a while, apart from that it will create swelling in the neck that might squeeze on the blood vessels going to and from the brain.

After all you live in a Mickey Mouse kind of a town, so it should be an advantage if you speak like him. And you won't lead anyone dead...

glad you're still with us, ponce! sorry you lost your wheels at the same time you endured this outcome.

please, if you or anyone you love is faced with the order to have "15 samples of blood" drawn every half hour" or something similar in the way of "orders" like for a blood draw every 4 hours, etc DEMAND TO SEE A FLOOR CHARGE NURSE and specifically request a PICC LINE be put in.

that charge nurse WILL wheel in a portable ultrasound machine, run it over your upper arm first, looking for a deeper vein that is straight and long enough to put in a PICC LINE with multi-dongles port. doing this will ELIMINATE the pincushion sticks nonesense REGARDLESS of however often blood draws are ordered to be done.

the draws will THEN come from one of the PICC LINE multiple port dongles associated with the PICC and taped down on the upper arm (their first placement choice)

damn doctors nor nurses DON'T like to tell patients about this pain saving PICC option, the scoundrels!!! why? because it makes more work for THEM!

you see, they (a NURSE!) has to drop everything and personally come in everytime someone from lab comes up to draw blood!! First the nurse, NOT THE LAB VAMPIRE, but the NURSE, has to do a saline flush of that dongle port by sterile saline syringe, THEN they have to stand there looking at their watch, if you get a nice one, might actually visit with you like a decent human being (or a family member) while they WAIT the MANDATORY TWO MINUTES for the saline to clear. THEN the NURSE has to perform the blood draw from that PICC port. then THEY hand back full however many pre-labelled vials are provided by the lab tech vampire obeying the required doctor's orders. easy peezy.

i have a loved one who needs frequent blood draws each hospitalization. a wise old charge nurse in ICU told me about this option. then that same CHARGE NURSE ordered the portable sonogram machine and DID PICC line insert, on the spot. bless them! the pincushion events were history, as the blood draw comes out of the PICC LINE port. and new ivs can be started in another one of the other dongle ports on the same PICC LINE dongle if necessary, preventing yet ANOTHER stick!

its gotten to the place where we ask for a PICC LINE when we hit the ER door anymore, and damn sure for before any surgery.

hope this helps you in the future Ponce.

and I hope it helps anyone else on here.

it's a simple sounding word, PICC (sounds like "pick") and should be easy to remember. Think toothpick for a neumonic word association.

even the immediate family member, or the durable power of attorney, or the health power of attorney can INSIST on this comfortable "one stick and done" PICC LINE protocol. They are good for 3 days, and then have to be redone. My loved one can handle 1 stick every 3 days!

ps be sure and have on hand or in the car or truck the original, wet-ink signed and witnessed, health power of attorney (or durable power of attorney) available at check-in in order to take proper care of your loved one if you accompany them for anything hospital related. we use the same hospital all the time, so I just finally took the documents down to medical records and insisted they be entered into the electronic record. done and done.

check with your state laws, because in some states a durable power of attorney EXCLUDES health power of attorney powers and you need BOTH documents to take care of your loved one.

another thing, you can request the normal saline or ringers lactate iv insertion by an EMT be anywhere BUT the back of your hand in the ambulance as well, and then insist on PICC line when you hit the ER.

we tend to forget in emergency situations that we ARE the customer. demand comfort where these damned frequent veni-puncture events are concerned. they can do it. it's just treated like a temple secret by medical staff.

before i learned about PICC lines i personally had my veins blown in my left arm from such frequent blood draws nonesense in the easy stickings inside elbow routine.

just think. in 3 days, with orders for an every half hour blooddraw, you are saving yourself and or your loved one 48 veni-punctures!!!!!!!! or at every 4 hours, 6 veni-punctures. PER DAY!

here's something you CAN do, and make THEM DO for yourself or your loved one.

get well, ponce.

One option is to ask the doc/hospital for a home-nurse visit(s) or referral. They can check on you w/o having someone live w/ you.

My great grandfather fought in WW1 and caught the Spanish flu. They thought he died, but a nurse saw him moving under the sheet in the hall.

Years later, he was told to leave Kansas for Hawaii because so much as a cold would kill him, and he needed warm weather.

He landed in San Francisco, and love it. Stayed. During the great depression he wasn't working many hours, caught a cold and told his wife "he would finish the workweek if it killed him." Last words, it did.

going on a hunch, asprin should probably be more pure than back in 1914. So while we might be consuming smaller pills or less pure "powders" it's probably the same efficiacy. Anyway it kind of makes sense given that it's a blood thinner, it seems logical it would affect the oxygenation of the blood and enhance the potential for bugs to multiply in that environment. Oxygenation seems to be a powerful force in fighting disease. I see it come up time and again. Different methods for achieving the same outcomes.
