(http://www.drudgereport.com/)“I started off making $7.40, they gave me a manager position and raised that to $7.75. When they took my manager position, they dropped me back down to $7.40, and I have two kids to put on top of that that I’m trying to support. And the ends still doesn’t meet so no, it’s not a comfortable living,” he said.
Other employees shared Collins’ views.
“It’s a very uncomfortable lifestyle working for $7.40 at McDonald’s when McDonald’s made like $500 billion last year,” one protestor said.

since it is taxed, i wonder how that compares to collecting cans.
there's one old guy with a walker whose car i always see near the can machines, and he is sorting through bags of cans.
"now there is a man who works hard for a living." :)

I like Zero Hedge's take on it:
A month ago we reported (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-07-29/us-fast-food-workers-strike-demand-100-pay-raise)that US fast food workers in several US cities, namely New York City, Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Mo., and Flint, Mich., walked out Monday in a one-day strike demanding a doubling (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-07-29/us-fast-food-workers-strike-demand-100-pay-raise)of their pay. Not unexpectedly, even though the president himself has been a strong proponent of rising the minimum wage, the corporations balked and the strikers achieved nothing and just in case there is some confusion, there is a lot of minimum skills, minimum wage applicants (not to mention robots) out there which translates into two words for the strikers: no leverage. However, these concepts may be foreign to a fast-food labor force that probably just wants a day out in the nice weather and to take a break from hard work for a change.

To be fair to the protestors, McDonalds posted that ridiculous budget showing how enriching your life can be with a Ronald career...
McDonalds’ suggested budget for employees shows just how impossible it is to get by on minimum wage (http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/202172/mcdonalds-suggested-budget-for-employees-shows-just-how-impossible-it-is-to-get-by-on-minimum-wage/)
By Robyn Pennacchia (http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/author/robyn-pennacchia/) 1 month ago
McDonald’s has partnered with Visa to make a website (http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/mcdonalds/budgetJournal/budgetJournal.php) dedicated to showing its employees how to properly budget their meager peasant salaries. However, what it actually does is illustrate the fact that it is nearly impossible (http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/07/15/2300321/mcdonalds-buget-low-wage/) to get by on minimum wage, as shown in this “example” budget chart:
http://deathandtaxesmag.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Screen-shot-2013-07-15-at-9.29.08-AM.png (http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/202172/mcdonalds-suggested-budget-for-employees-shows-just-how-impossible-it-is-to-get-by-on-minimum-wage/screen-shot-2013-07-15-at-9-29-08-am/)
Yeah– now, when I first saw that, I assumed that the top line was for a part-time McDonald’s employee. Then I got out my calculator– that is actually what you would make if you were working full-time at McDonald’s. 1,105 dollars a month.
Now let’s say that the “second” job that they budget in here (feels like cheating, but OK) is also minimum wage. That would mean you were working about 62 hours a week, on average. Oh, wait. That’s if they live in Illinois where the minimum wage is $8.25. The national minimum wage is $7.25. That translates to 74 hours a week. That’s almost a whole other full time job.
And what do you get for working 74 hours a week? Well, you don’t get heat, clearly. There’s a big ol’ zero next to the heat in that chart. In my building– we have separate checks for gas and electric– that would mean that not only do you not get to heat and cool your home, but also that you do not get to heat your water, or cook on your stove, if you have a gas stove (I do).
Also noticeably absent in this budget? Food. And gas. There’s a line for a car payment, but not for gas. Which is suspect, because if you’re working two jobs it’s possible you will pay more for your gas than you’d be paying for your car.
Also… health insurance for $20 a month? There is really no such thing as health insurance for $20 a month if you’re buying your health insurance on your own. I think the least amount is going to be about $215 a month– and that only covers hospital emergencies.
The minimum wage in this country is reprehensible. If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation it would be over $10 an hour. If it had kept up with productivity? It would be $21.72 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/13/minimum-wage-productivity_n_2680639.html).

That amount covers the IRS penalty fee for not buying obamacare (because they can't afford it) better to pay that than end up in a FEMA camp, I guess.
If individuals choose not to carry insurance, they are subject to a penalty, starting at $95 per person per year or 1 percent of income in 2014, whichever is greater, and eventually reaching $695 per person or 2.5 percent of income by 2016.

when i was visiting my mother, what there was to eat was "Lean Cuisine". i don't know how they call those things a 'meal'.
for dinner - when i eat light - i usually ate 2 of them.
they do come in handy, but cook-your-own food is way more affordable. i try to cook from my bulk prep food.
i am vulnerable in the area of dependence on electricity for cooking, though. power goes out and i'm eating cold corn out of cans. which isn't too terrible.

I'd think McDonald's employees would get charged a higher premium simply for inhaling the fryer grease all day long.

I don't know where you are at but there are no jobs paying that at experience level let alone entry level. Managers (restaurants) get at the most a buck an hour more. If you are a server where you can (emphasis 'can') get substantial tips still limit hours to less than 30 hours and the pay is 2:18 an hour. If you aren't willing to slut yourself out at a hard working job IE: construction/concrete your looking at minimum unless you carry insurance (150 minimum cost per month), then you can score big with a lot of experience probably 12 an hour. Reality man, keep doing what your doing until reality hits your part of the woods man.

Why is the person needing to hire some labor responsible for handling the personal finances/budgets of who they hire?
like Peter Schiff said: 'Employers are buyers, employees are sellers.'

Chick-fil-a a lot of time has high school kids and i bet they could possibly draft in only particular schools and or churches.

McDonald's is not a career, it's a stepping stone for young folks. My first job, was McD's. I was paid $4.25 an hour, 15 years old. After 6 months, I was told I was doing a great job and deserved a raise....they gave me a 10 cent raise, to $4.35 an hour.
After that, I got hired on at the local gas station which I really enjoyed and was paid $6/hr. Back then that was pretty decent for a high school job that I could do after school and on weekends.
McDonalds back then looked good on an employment application. If you could last 6 months working at McDonalds, you were assumed to have good work ethics.

I got my first job at age 14, I was paid $3/hr, cash under the table. I ended up spending almost 8 years there, worked my way up to restaurant manager before I finished college.

The entire contents of this thread is a testament to the destruction of the dollar, gov price controls and inflation. It's also notable how quickly this has happened since most of us were kids on our 1st jobs.

What I made right out of high school is more than I have been making the past few years. Seems the more I try to build business the more it costs and what I sell for is the same as it was when I started 30+ years ago.

The video was released Monday when it became public record. A security video from a McDonald's in Ohio shows a woman punching two restaurant employees and smashing a drive-thru window because she couldn't get Chicken McNuggets.
The tantrum caught on tape in Toledo earlier this year shows the customer reaching through the drive-thru window, slugging one worker and then another. She then grabs a bottle out of her car and tosses it through the glass window before speeding off.
It happened early on New Year's Day. Police say Melodi Dushane was angry that McNuggets weren't being served, because it was breakfast time.
Dushane says she was drunk at the time. She was sentenced to 60 days in jail last month and ordered to pay McDonald's for the broken window.

LOL. Normally, I don't find this stuff funny, but that video was hilarious.
