Uh, okay. Apparently the United Nations is calling for an investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin. When I came upon this a few days ago I thought it had to be a joke, but after some research I found it to be true. On September 3rd the UN Office Of The High Commissioner Of Human Rights in Geneva called for action.
The United Nations Working Group of Experts of People of African Descent (great name) and the UN Special Rapporteur (is that even a thing?) on racism have told the United States Government “to finalize without undue delay” the investigation of the case involving the death of Trayvon Martin. They also want “the delivery of justice and appropriate reparations.” I had no idea the UN had that kind of authority.
Despite being acquitted by a jury of his peers for the self-defense shooting of Martin, George Zimmerman has been the target of an investigation. The US Department of Justice, the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have all been looking into whether Zimmerman violated Martin’s civil rights. And now GZ has the UN up his ass as well.
The UN special what-ever-you-want-to-call-it group has concerns over perceived racism that they feel led to Martin’s death. “We call upon the US Government to examine its laws that could have discriminatory impact on African Americans, and to ensure that such laws are in full compliance with the country’s international legal obligations and relevant standards,” said human rights expert Verene Shepherd, the current head of the Working Group.
Shepherd stated that the US is party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights since 1992 and the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination since 1994. I guess that’s why the UN thinks they have a dog in the fight. She went on to say, “The Trayvon Martin case has highlighted the importance of the need to review those existing laws and policies that can have a discriminatory effect on the basis of race, as African Americans become more vulnerable to such discrimination.”
And surprise, surprise, it was Jesse Jackson that called upon the UN in the first place. Just after Zimmerman’s acquittal, the pot-stirring Reverend demanded the UN Human Rights Council launch an investigation into “the racial context that led to Trayvon Martin’s slaying.” He was, of course, referring to the “Stand Your Ground” laws that many African Americans blame for Martin’s death.
Stand Your Ground laws basically say that when faced with probable great bodily harm or death, you may defend yourself. Believe it of not, many states require you to retreat in such situations. It is not a license to kill as some may suggest, you still must prove you legitimately feared for your life. George Zimmerman drew his weapon and shot as his head was being bashed into the sidewalk. He had no ability to retreat. It was a case of simple self-defense, not SYG. In court, Zimmerman’s defense was “self-defense.” The jury agreed and set him free.
Jesse Jackson, the UN, and uninformed activists everywhere can raise as much stink as they want. It doesn’t change the fact that Stand Your Ground laws do not create an “open season” on blacks and they had nothing to do with the Trayvon Martin case. If The United Nations Working Group of Experts of People of African Descent want to find human rights violations, I suggest they look in Africa where African people violate each other on a constant basis.
