In the tittle of this article is the key words...."High Altitute"....they can be use in planes to dissable other planes instead of using bullets and missiles, also at sea for ships.....like....pirates boats?

The same company is developing, “High altitude electromagnetic pulse weapons.”

Via: Telegraph:

An energy beam that can be fired to disable vehicles and electronic devices has been developed by Nato scientists.

The device uses an intense pulse of electromagnetic energy that can be directed at a moving vehicle to interfere with the electronics on board.

Tests conducted by Nato scientists who have been developing the device in Norway show that it can stop a car approaching a roadblock and could be used to thwart suicide bomb attacks.

It can also be carried in the back of a vehicle to disable other vehicles that are in pursuit.

The researchers, who are working as part of Nato’s Science and Technology Organisation, have also demonstrated it can disable jet skis and drones.

The device has been compared to the satellite weapon that features in the James Bond movie Golden Eye. In this an electromagnetic beam is fired from a satellite in orbit to disable electronic equipment.

While the latest device cannot work on the same scale, it has the potential to disable almost any electronic device.

It is, however, unlikely to work against older vehicles that rely upon purely mechanical equipment.

Electromagnetic pulses create an intense magnetic field that damages electronic circuitry.

Details of how the new device works are still secret but it is likely to use microwaves or radio frequency energy.

Images released by Nato show pressure transmitters that are used to generate electrical signals.

The new device has been developed in collaboration with defence company Diehl, which has also been working on high altitude electromagnetic pulse weapons.

Those types of "weapons" have been around since early 2000. The problem is that they can not be adequately controlled. Say there is a guy standing on the side walk as he's watching a car fly by the moment that "Mr. Officer Friendly" fires and disables the car, the guy just standing there is no longer standing. He had a pace maker and the EMP fried the device keeping his heart pumping. He's now dead, collateral damage of an EMP type weapon.

Hell there are plans on the internet to make your own directed EMP type device. The problem is you have no idea who is wearing an electronic implantable device and you'll end up killing to disable a machine they may or may not even be in. Just in the general area.

Good point. Also, imagine if the guy driving the car had a pace maker. Then you'd have a dead driver, and an out of control car that could plow into a bunch of bystanders. The chances of that happening seem rare, but all it takes is once.

The amount of electronic equipment that are being implanted in people will go up as time goes on. Think of Cochlear implants. (Allow a deaf person to hear by bypassing the ear canal and sending the sound signals directly to the brain) That gets wired directly into the brain through a skull implant. An EMP doesn't just render electronic devices inoperable it usually fries the equipment. So those little electrodes stuck into a deaf persons brain get turned into watt, or maybe even a kilowatt cattle prod depending on locality to the EMP pulse.

Interesting, in that it gives some credence to the 911 "directed energy weapon" thesis.

Another reason to not get implanted with electronic devices. Especially brain implants

older vehicles are less sensitive to massive EMI. e.g. 30 years old.

once i bought a TEMPEST Mac 2cx at a surplus place.

basically a big gasketed metal box with all the connectors filtered.
