33 of 55 Bluefin Tuna Off California Coast Radioactive
Intellihub.com - October 3, 2013
CALIFORNIA — 33 of 50 Bluefin Tuna off the coast have been contaminated with radioactive Cesium 134, possibly from the previously decimated Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant which lies on the East coast of Japan reported NHK World.
According to the report, the radiation is accumulative, and the fact that Tuna is at the top of the food chain is even more concerning. According to the report “juvenile” tuna migrate from the waters of Japan over a 4 month period yearly.
Right now Japanese researchers have reached out to U.S. researchers to assess all of the current and future data. In one instance, 30 samples of U.S. Bluefin Tuna were stopped by customs from entering Japan. The samples are reported to still be frozen at the airport 6 months later, showing the urgency of the problem.
“Scientists are calling for international cooperation”, according to the report.

From I could tell, the readings were low, less than 1 Becquerel per kg.
The safety limit for wild pigs hunted in Germany near where Chernobyl dumped its radiation, is 600 Bq per kg.
However as the video from NHK points out, tuna are at the top of the food chain, and it accumulates.
Since these results are based on older samples, and since it takes time for the tuna to grow and mature and thus do more uptake, it is reasonable to assume that the amounts will increase and increase.
How long that will take, no one knows.
NOTE: the Japanese thought that the level would not be detectable, so they were surprised that it was detectable... and we are in the early stages.

I don't plan on eating ANY seafood from the Northern Hemisphere part of the Pacific Ocean EVER again.
I try to get as much meat from Southern Hemisphere as possible. Almost all of the beef I buy now is imported from Uruguay. South America generally has the most radiation-free food on the planet. So consider keeping an eye out for food options from that region. If you're interested in this look for grass-fed beef (typically ground beef) at your grocery store. Examine it to see what country it says its from.
Radiation is everywhere and in almost everything. If you don't have a HEPA filter you're risking lung cancer. Hopefully when I can finally buy my own land I can setup a hydroponics greenhouse with HEPA filters and grow my own radiation-free food year around.

I don't believe a filter is going to do any good at all. Taking precautions such as not eating from a known contamination zone is wise. If it gets to a point where one needs a hepa filter, then the contamination is so widespread and prevalent that no amount of filtering will protect us. You cannot wear a mask all day and night and I don't believe you could get your animals to either. Then there is the need for clean water. Humans have a need to freely move outdoors and if this cannot be done then death is a finer alternative.

universal dualities work again: while expiration dates condone food destruction for the sake of corporate profits, they also happen to save lives...

I still have some wild Alaskan salmon canned before the radiation spread. Atlantic salmon is all farmed and shit. Really gonna miss it when it is gone.
Any other canned seafood ideas?
:(??

Other then food imported from Japan and seafood, I don't think think the radiation risk is that bad. Sure there will be slightly more radiation but remember that the US and Soviets detonated hundreds of nukes in the 50's and our parents and us have managed to survive.
If you are really that concerned you might want to just move to the southern hemisphere.
I am more concerned with chemtrails and the heavy metal contamination of land.

Wish I knew, there has got to be stuff wild caught from the Atlantic or southern hemisphere that is available.
I used to see freshwater frozen whitefish from our northern lakes at all the supermarkets years ago. Now that I am looking for it because I don't trust seafood from the pacific I can't find it, except overpriced at the farmers market.

the same can be said about seafood from the Gulf of Mexico.
