The media and the politicians want us to believe that we live in a dangerous, Hobbesian world where it is war of all against all. The truth is that we live in a civilized society for the most part with a few exceptions. Whatever trouble we have in maintaining the peace is caused by the people who want to rule us with the excuse of 'keeping us safe'. It is their protection racket. Our would-be rulers are the exceptions to our civilized society.

I am really surprised in the letter above that nobody called the police to report the shotgun as a public nuisance, and that the cops didn't show up and murder the author of the letter.
