After Oregon State Police Trooper Matthew Zistel pulled over John Van Allen for speeding, the scene got quite chilling.

Van Allen, as seen on Zistel’s dashcam video, hops out of the car dressed in what appears to be military-style clothing, stands with a defensive posture facing the police cruiser — which hadn’t yet come to a complete stop — and has one arm behind his back, notes KATU-TV.

“Police! Get back in the car for me,” Zistel tells the 34-year-old driver.

Van Allen does not comply.

“Sir, get back in the car for me now!” Zistel repeats.

Not only does Van Allen not comply, he begins walking toward Zistel — and then pulls his arm from behind his back, draws a handgun, and starts firing.

Van Allen shoots Zistel in the side, runs back to his car, and speeds down the highway.

“Shots fired! Shots fired! 53-26 shots fired!” Zistel yells into his radio just before Van Allen seemingly making a clean getaway (53-26 represents Zistel’s unit number, KATU says).

But the dashcam video doesn’t tell the whole story.

Zistel’s injury wasn’t serious, and he was released from the hospital later that day, KATU reports.

Not the same can be said for Allen, however.

Investigators say that when Zistel returned fire, he struck Allen in the chest, although that’s not apparent in the video. KATU reports that other troopers found Allen about a half mile down the road, slumped over his steering wheel — he was dead.

Not only that, Allen had his three children in the car – a 10-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy, and a 15-year-old boy, KATU notes.

The Sherman County district attorney found that Zistel was justified in using deadly force when he shot Allen. Oregon State Police officials released the video to media Thursday; the incident occurred August 29.

Chilling video. Amazing the cop is still alive. That happened fast, and that guy knew how to aim and fire a pistol quickly. When he didn't get the cop, and got hit himself, he retreated.

I guess that's how handgun battles go. I don't know for sure, as I've never been in one, and I hope to keep it that way.

ETA: now that I've watched the video a few times, I think it's all acting. Theater and nothing more, for obvious purposes.

Is there any reason given as to why?

This happened over a month ago.

Shady, may have been running from something, sounds like the Aunt has been briefed too.

THE DALLES, Ore. – Police identified the driver who was shot and killed after he reportedly fired on an Oregon State trooper during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles Thursday.

John Van Allen II, 34, (pictured right) died from a single gunshot wound. Allen's family told KGW Friday that he was heading out of town on a road trip with his three kids, ages 10, 13 and 15, who were in the car at the time of the shooting. They don't understand why Allen, who they say is an Army veteran, pulled a gun on the trooper.

"It's upsetting because he was trying to take his children on a road trip and this is a most unfortunate incident, but I'd just like to get to the bottom of it and find out what caused it all," said Allen's aunt, Deborah Morton-Hamlet.

The deadly shooting started just before 1 p.m. when a State trooper pulled over a vehicle driven by Allen. He reportedly got out and fired on Trooper Matthew Zistel, 26, hitting him in the side. Zistel returned fire and Allen got back into his vehicle, Hastings said.

Allen was then found about a half mile down the road slumped over in his vehicle. Troopers tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Hastings said.

Zistel was taken to a nearby hospital with a mild gunshot wound to his left side. He was released Thursday evening, Hastings said. The juveniles were taken to The Dalles for questioning by investigators.

Interstate 84 was closed at Biggs Junction between mileposts 105 and 109 for several hours after the shooting. .

I don't think it's acting, I think that video is the real deal. I think about handgun battles sometimes. Been close several times, thankfully never in one and hope to keep it that way too.

The thing about handgun battles, it seems almost everyone gets hurt. Your chances are slim I think of not getting hit. Take the guy in this video, see how fast he draws his gun and starts firing rounds.

Think about this fact. It takes your mind 3/4 of second to process a threat. That guy in the video probably fired 2 rounds maybe before the cop's mind even processed the fact that he was being shot at. You lose that 3/4 of a second to the attacker, whether he's in your home, or on the street thug turd out to harm others.

The good guys always have the odds against them, in handgun battles, imo.

Same with the innocent homeowner that has the front of his house blown open to welcome a swat team on accident.

The cops are not the good guys. If the pig was killed he would have deserved it. How many lives has he ruined in his quest for revenue and need to exert force over his fellows? He is a hired gun and nothing more.

In this situation the cop has better odds due to the tons of metal and glass surrounding him.

I imagine he was standing behind the door of an S.U.V.
