WILLIAM THOMAS TODD
William Thomas Todd, 91, of Leavenworth, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. He was born on Jan. 16, 1922, in Lake City, Iowa, the son of Henry and Minnie Mae (George) Todd. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1941. William was awarded a scholarship for football to Drake University but instead chose to join the Marine Corps on Dec. 17, 1941. After serving 40 months in the South Pacific, Bill was wounded in the battle of Iwo Jima, and was awarded the Purple Heart (http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/purple-heart/?personid=167422904&affiliateID=1164).
On Nov. 21, 1942, William married Ruth Quinn, in Hollywood, Calif. She survives him. He is also survived by his children, Susan (Darius) Contractor, Beth (Al) Morgese, Laurie (Jerry) Hess, Bill Todd Jr., Mary Schowengerdt, Anthony (Linda) Todd, Peggy (Ed) Schneider, Patty Todd, Michael (Michelle) Todd and Annie (Jeremiah) Nichol; 49 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; three nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; three daughters, Kathie Mae Todd, Theresa Eibes and Linda Werner Whetstone; two sons, John Todd and Joseph Todd.
William was a businessman. He traveled and worked many different jobs throughout the United States until he owned his own construction company. In 1955, William and his family settled in Kansas City. He was very active in St. Agnes Catholic Parish. Bill was also very involved with his children's activities. In 1979, he moved his family to the Leavenworth area where he purchased a farm and enjoyed the country life, returning to his roots. He enjoyed camping and time spent in his RV. In his later years Bill and Ruth enjoyed wintering in Texas and they loved the time spent there. He loved his family dearly and will be greatly missed.
Visitation beginning with praying the Rosary will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Ca (http://O.Ca)rm., as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Honor Flight or Disabled American Veterans. Published in Kansas City Star on Oct. 8, 2013
