Bump
So far it could be real and grounded. (plausible)
Also so far they are showing preppers as maybe not so crazy after all..
Edit: Halfway and it still looks like something that could happen, for real.
So far no hype or political bend or slants.

I'm waiting for some kind of lesson at the end.

I'm waiting for some kind of lesson at the end. Probably Live for today but plan for tomorrow's unknowns.
Or sumthing like that.

Preppers are crazy and should be locked up in concentration camps. Drink your fluoride kiddies.

The ending sucked. The power just magically came back on for everyone even though the entire program had hammered home the point that the infrastructure was damaged beyond quick repair due to a cyber attack that overpowered transformers and even showed them blowing up.
That said, it was a good exercise in negative visualization and Nat Geo certainly got to advertise the heck out of their doomsday preppers show.

True, but they did leave intact how things can go downhill as far as loss food/services and such. How our normally civilized neighbors can turn against each other. How crowds can turn into gangs maybe worse than what we see at localized areas when looters come out to play but on a national scale. The break down of society because not everyone is able/ready to cope with a long term loss of power on a national scale.
Yes they did show how preppers are prepared and also how their neighbors may react, lesson I saw is to keep your mouth shut and any prepping activity you do private.
I think the ending did suck, but with the time frame and to keep it a single program what could they do. They simplified it as as when the power comes back, poof everything is suddenly good for all.
We all know that would not be so. The program should make thinking people think because of the way they left the end sorta open ended and did not show a resolution of the last scene standoff. Did it end in a shootout? The mob was still hungry and still had no fuel and such.
People can not eat electricity!
IMO the program was as close to what could really happen here if the nation lost power, and how people would react and looters/gangs and individuals would react when they become hungry and such.
The program did not over blow or exaggerate what could happen from what I could see.
But more on what could/would/will happen.
At least that was my take on the program.
Edit: Some of the transformers as I understand it used on the national and local grids are very specialized and more custom built than just off the shelf..
If they blow and if no replacements are available, I can see it taking months or more to replace if a bunch of them blow. I think not many company's make very large transformers.
One question came to mind, is how did a cyber attack blow all of those transformers? I did a quick search and it looks like they would have to be physically blown up. Yes some of the controls are Internet controlled, but all of the transformers would have their own physical overload safety/protection systems.
That maybe the only thing that they did exaggerate about? To bring the entire power grid down I just can not see transformers blowing by their selfs on a national scale by hacking. ? ? ?

I think an EMP is more plausible but then they wouldn't be able to have their "blair witch" type program with everyone holding video cameras. That certainly added to the realistic aspect of the program much more so then if it had been a "on the set" feature.
One thing they did well was to show the common sheeple's perspective, ie, the penthouse couple that dined on warm caviar and champagne then tried to buy bottled water with a credit card and then got away with a stolen can of peaches only to discover their electric can opener is useless. People are absolutely that unprepared.
The prepper story was important as well. It demonstrated how much you can prepare and plan but then have your plans falter due to the well-meaning actions of someone in your group.
