Detroit- as bad as I heard

I was in the Detroit area this week. I was heading to Dearborn, and missed an exit. My GPS started wigging out, so I just got off, and ended up somewhere in SW Detroit. The place is as bad as described. I was amazed at what I saw. It looks like an marauding army marched through there. More than half the businesses closed, many gutted. Grafiti everywhere. I drove around several blocks trying to get out, and it was pretty consistent throughout the area. I did not feel like trying to grab my tablet and start taking pictures. I just wanted to keep moving! I thought I would see some bad spots, but this is total devastation. In some ways, it looked worse than the parts of India I have seen. At least in India, though messy, crowded, and dirty (in some areas, some areas are pretty decent), no one wastes storefront space. If there is space, there is an occupied store or booth, stand or something, and economic activity going on.

i have never been there but my brother went there last year to a machine shop sale and he said what you see on tv only show you part of hell .this is going to happen in every state . people need to help there selfs there no way welfare can do that . they can only tax the ones that are working so far before they stop working then a full blow take down will happen

Back in the late 80's, (before their collapse) the family went on a Canadian fishing trip, on the way there a wrong turn was taken and we wound up lost in downtown Detroit. It was a dangerous shithole then and I can only imagine what it must be like now. That was a fucked up situation to be in, riding in a pick up truck with a camper, pulling a bass boat, it was pretty intense there for a while. It was scary enough that dad got the pistol out and that in itself said a lot.

The neighborhoods really are that bad. Downtown isn't quite as bad, there's a ton more police presence and effort to keep it clean. I have no problem going to a festival downtown but those neighborhoods are as bad as it gets.

DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are “functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with the Fund’s Director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, who explained exactly what this means.

“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.

“I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” Tyler-Ruiz said.

Some of the Detroit suburbs also have high numbers of functionally illiterate: 34 percent in Pontiac and 24 percent in Southfield.

“For other major urban areas, we are a little bit on the high side… We compare, slightly higher, to Washington D.C.’s urban population, in certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland,” she said.

Public schools have to pass every one of them. Even if they never show up for class, if they failed the schools will get less government money. There are areas in Detroit where people with money are investing and rebuilding but the areas are few and few between. Downtown is solid now with a lot of action. They tell me it's actually pretty safe compared to years ago but still need to carry going in and going out of that area.

I grew up in Detroit [SW side] and know why Southfield and Pontiac have those numbers..... Let me explain.

Demographics for Southfield from wiki: The racial makeup of the city was 70.3% African American, 24.9% White, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.

Demographics for Pontiac from wiki: The racial makeup of the city was 34.4% White, 52.1% African American, 0.6% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 6.2% from other races, and 4.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.5% of the population.

I wonder what the demographics for those "certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland" are. Hmmmmm...
