22 Year Old With Down Syndrome Beaten By The Police For “Bulge In Pants” That Was His Colostomy Bag

A man with special needs is speaking out after he was left badly bruised by police. Twenty-two-year-old Gilberto Powell, who has Down Syndrome, is left with horrible bruises and scars on his face after he had an encounter with police outside his home.

“That’s my son. That’s my baby. I really love this little boy. He’s my love,” said Powell’s mother, Josephine.

According to the family, they were inside their Southwest Miami-Dade home last Saturday when Powell, who is also called Liko, called his parents on his cell phone to let them know he was walking a block from his friend’s house.

On his way home, Liko said, “The police followed me.”

Liko said, the officer smacked him in the face with an open hand and knocked him to the ground.

“His whole hand,” he said.

According to the police report, a Miami-Dade Police officer noticed a bulge in Liko’s waistband. The officer attempted to conduct a pat down, and Powell tried to run away.

“I said, ‘Didn’t you know he was a Down Syndrome kid?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not a doctor. I don’t know.’ And I said, ‘Well, you can see it in his face that he is a Down Syndrome kid,’” said Josephine.

A police officer will beat a woman or a child, no problem. The police are cowards. One on one, an officer will not beat a guy. The officer might get his ass kicked. They will wait for the gang of officers to come before they will beat a guy silly or to death. But women and children are victims of single male officers. The cops are pure cowards. It takes a coward to be a cop.

Probably 90 percent of cops are cowards.

She lived next door to me and has been in a vegetative state up until last night when she passed away. She wasn't the best kid at times but she was a kid none the less and had time to turn her life around. She was handcuffed and had no way to protect her head when this fat, lazy cop tasered her. He still has his job by the way and was never reprimanded for fatally injuring a 90lb, 16 year old girl. Way to go Pinellas County. RIP Danielle, I'm sorry this happened to you.

the fact that he is a down syndrome kid is not the point at all.

I would say it is a big point. I don't believe I have ever seen a crime report where the perp was Down's.

“I said, ‘Didn’t you know he was a Down Syndrome kid?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not a doctor. I am a thug. I don’t know and I don't care.’ And I said, ‘Well, you can see it in his face that he is a Down Syndrome kid,’” said Josephine.

Fixed that cop's answer to be a little more honest.

More and more people I meet are disliking cops. I find myself keeping my past personal information quiet until I know and trust someone.

Can't blame you there. Cops are no longer the cops we grew up with. I worked at a gas station as a fry cook during my teenage years. I got along great with the small town cop that would routinely just hang out there to shoot the shit when nothing was going on.

I saved up bought a new (new to me) car and was speeding, he pulled me over. As soon as he realized it was me just said slow down and asked to see what was under the hood.

Later on a year or so later my friend and I ended up getting paint ball guns. We were heading to the paint field and he saw us leaving and decided he wanted to just fuck around with us. Pulled me over once, said have a nice day and laughed as he walked away. I said jackass, he started laughing, my friend pulled out the paint ball gun and shot the cop car as he was walking back to it. He turns right around and goes ok you 2 assholes, pulls out the pepper spray and sprays some in the back seat. He says here you should like that.. starts laughing. I said you fucker, he laughs ok fun is fun. and we went back with him to the station and helped wash his car while he helped with removing the pepper spray from the back seat.

That was my experience with cops growing up... It took a while to see, but they are definitely not friendly like that anymore. He ended up retiring a few years ago. Still keep in touch when I'm in town.

That's a good story, Ares. I've had no experiences like that in my life. Every experience with a cop in my life has resulted in me being threatened, fined, harassed, lectured to, lied to, manhandled, etc. Only once did I have a cop "turn" and become friendly, after pulling me and my buddies over, lying to us as he told us he smelled weed in our car, then he spied our Bibles as my friends and I were all part of the same youth group, then it was all smiles and "what church do you go to?". Made me sick.

Civil Asset Forfeiture. Cop was looking to "legally steal" would of been my guess.

Why I said it took a while to come to grips with that cops today are not like the couple I was friends with of my youth. Even when I got arrested the other officer on the small town force pulled some strings to get some of my belongings back. Had I been anyone else (someone they didn't know) I never would of saw any of my belongings again. No paper work, nothing, just said stop by the station to pick it up.

Hell there was a night that I just sat and bullshitted with the chief of police all night to pass the time.

So to go from there to where I am now with my views on police only takes reality to see what they have become. I drove through my old small town last time I was home and I don't even recognize that force anymore. More paramilitary, dodge chargers with roll bars and front grills combat ready looking etc. No idea of what equipment it has inside.

Everything the DOJ wants them to have in those cars, all paid for by Fed 'grants' of course.
