Folks, what do you think of this product? Chad?

My thoughts:

Pros: Would make a great gift to a non prepping friend. Self contained, will last indefinitely, puts out a lot of heat and cooking ability. Would be well matched to stash with some mountain house meals in an emergency kit.

Cons: Cost, 4-5 hours of cooking time at a price of $30. But....seems like it could be used longer if a small fire was lit inside perhaps, but that would be needed to be tested. Other cons, size and weight.

my mom and step dad have one in their prep room. i never fired it up, but i unboxed it and checked it out.

basically, it's a proprietary wood gas stove. it runs on fuel cells that you have to buy from stove in a can. it ships with 4, each burns 1 hour they say. the fuel cells are made out of sawdust, wood chips, cellulose, and wax it look like. after the fuel cells run out, you either have to make your own or buy more from stove in a can. i don't believe they would burn an hour either from looking at them.

i wouldn't bother with it, because the fuel cells are insanely expensive. you could make your own fuel cells i guess, but why bother when you could just spend $20 more and buy a real wood gas stove off ebay that burns twigs, etc? after the fuel cells are gone, you can't use this as a real wood gas stove because the airport design is modified. it requires a fuel cell.

just buy a wood gas stove off ebay, or go to the hardware store and make one yourself (plans are all over the internet). stove in a can is the gillet razor of stoves. stove is cheap, they murder you on fuel cells. it would be okay for a one use emergency item in your car, boat, etc. but that's about it.

it'd be okay to store in the trunk of your car in case you got stranded, but there's no way you'd want this as your bug out stove or anything. it's a use and throw away stove.
