These women suffered immeasurably during the Holodomor. They saw 10 million (mostly Christians) starved by the Jews and possibly another 10 million the Jews executed, imprisoned or deported to Siberia as “the people’s enemies".
They are a very hardy and determined bunch...perhaps giving them the resistance to survive radioactive contamination.

I've been wondering if radiation really only effects people who are born, not healthy adults. Like it will distort their DNA and cause mutations. Sure it increases your cancer risk, but if you're leading a healthy lifestyle, and (perhaps) consuming something that fights cancer (like Vitamin B-17) you may be mostly immune. I don't know though. This all is still a relatively new phenomenon with the inception of nuclear technologies. We don't know everything yet.
